Looks like accident forgiveness is going to save my ass with regards to last Saturday's "Prius incident," and I'm going to just buy a Toyota OEM front bumper cover for my truck...

As for my rear bumper, you'd be amazed what a coat of plasti-dip has done!

1996-2005 Carrier TECH2000 straight-cool A/C unit at the Masonic Temple...

    image.jpg

This basic style of unit debuted in 1989 and remained in production virtually unchanged until 2005. I believe this specific style (separate grate-style grille as opposed to the stamped-metal grille seen on lower-end models) first appeared in 1993 or 1994. I know this is at least a 1996 model (probably newer) because it has Puron (R410a) refrigerant; In 1996, Carrier was the first HVAC manufacturer to offer units with R410a refrigerant (under the Puron name) as opposed to R-22 Freon. The second oldest R410a system I've personally seen is the 2003 Lennox system at my friend Mike's house. 2005-2006, pretty much all higher-end A/C units and heat pumps had R410a (still called Puron in Carrier and Bryant products today). In 2009 or 2010, the EPA mandated that all new HVAC equipment must used R410a. A loophole in the system allows manufacturers to sell air-conditioners and heat pumps as "R-22 components" without the Freon charge so people with older systems can keep them running for a few more years. Very few contractors will replace a part on an R-22 system, especially if the system is 8 to 10 years old or older!

Mike's parents really made a smart decision back in 2003 when they didn't cheap out on their A/C system. They got a top-of-the line 15 SEER Dave Lennox Signature Series 2.5-ton A/C with a matching 80% AFUE gas furnace. The furnace failed this past winter, and replacing it required the replacement of the indoor coil as well. The A/C was in perfect condition, and luckily it had R410, so my friend's parents saved more than three grand!

Ah, the Trane XE1000, one of the best split-system condensers of 1990s in my opinion. The heat pump seen in this picture is just a little guy, more than likely a 1.5-ton (18,000 BTU) or 2-ton (24,000 BTU)...

    image.jpg

Trane XE-series units, in both heat pump and straight-cool form, last for a decade or more with minimal upkeep required on the part of the owner. Heat pump pumps generally have a shorter lifespan than the conventional A/C units because the unit is essentially performing double duty and is in use all year along, whereas an air-conditioner is typical only used a few months out of the year in most areas. There are, however, exceptions to the rule...

At a commercial property in Newtown, there was a Trane XE800 (or possibly 900) from 1987, and it was in regular use year-round until it died in 2012 or 2013 and was replaced with a new Trane XB-Series. On the flip side, the newer XE1000s (first introduced in 1992-1993 to bring Trane into compliance with the EPA's new 10 SEER mandatory minimum) tend to not last as long. The 1998 XE1000 heat pump at my friend Doug's parents' house, installed in the summer of 1999 as a quick drop-in replacement for the original Trane when it died in the middle of a heat wave, suffered compressor failure in April 2010. My aunt and uncle's 2001 XE1000 heat pump suffered a compressor failure in 2008, which was actually the result of lightning striking the house during a freak storm. The strike also took out the burglar alarm. In addition to paying for a new alarm system, insurance paid to replace the compressor in what was then a 7-year old unit instead of replacing the whole unit. The 2001 Trane developed a Freon leak in 2014 (though it still worked) and was replaced with a basic Carrier system right before my aunt and uncle sold the house.

One unique characteristic of Trane residential and light commercial products going back to the 1980s is that the compressor is painted red. Look down into any unit other than a Trane and you will see that the compressor is black.

Another unique Trane feature is that even in 2018, most of their units use a reciprocating compressor. Even more unique is that Trane manufactures its own compressors, under the name Climatuff. As of 2018, almost all other manufacturers use scroll compressors, most commonly Copeland. Scroll compressors are known for being more durable than the recips, but at the same time Climatuff recip compressors have a reputation as one of the best in the industry. Only some of the cheaper Trane products use scroll compressors, but they are still red instead of black. Trane scroll compressors are typically made by a company called Alliance if I remember correctly. All XE1000s had recips. Despite being Trane's cheapest models, the XE-Series units still had many of Trane's best features; These included the spine-fin cools, and components like the reversing valve being located behind an easy-access panel instead of down in the inner depths of the unit. The XE-series debuted in 1986 and remained in production until 2002.

Also, at a time when just about every other company had exposed condensers (protected by a flimsy chicken wire-like surround) on all but their most expensive units, Trane products always had louvered panels on all units. The only Trane product to not offer the full protection is an XB-series unit introduced in 2012 or so and intended for zero-lot-line/narrow property applications.

Took my mom's 2013 Murano to get detailed today as an early Mother's Day present...

As you can see she does not drive much! My parents bought the Murano used in September 2014 (around Labor Day) with 11,000 miles on the clock; less than 4 years later...

Found a way around Wawa's policy of asking for ID every time...

Give them my military ID instead of my driver's license! It doesn't have my address on it and they can't scan it!

Also, the factory Bose system in my mom's Murano has absolutely no balls compared to what I've got in my truck now!

The strand lights on the patio at work use these low-wattage "Edison" bulbs, and a few of them were burned out. My boss gave me $20 in cash and told me to get as many as I could that. Turns out that these bulbs are quite cheap nowadays and $20 gets you quite a few (17 to be exact)!

I drive a 2010 RC 5-lug, and I want to buy the aftermarket headlights seen in the Fleabay screenshot. However, I am worried about buying headlights that leak...

I am looking to replace my headlights because they don't match anymore. The left headlight was replaced in 2015 following a minor accident. The right headlight is original, and it shows. The left headlight also has a scuff on it so I figured I may as well replace them both so they look the same...

    image.jpg

Does anybody on TW have any recommendations for quality headlight lenses/covers? The actual headlights themselves work just fine and will not be replaced.

    Thanks!
