The problem with my Taco in a rollover wouldn't be body damage. The curtain airbags would most certainly deploy and since my truck is almost 8 years old and is worth less than $12,000 it would more than likely be totaled. The cost just to replace the airbags would be $3,000+.

 

They actually do make rubber things for the city. Also, I've never damaged the tailgate. The bumper sticks out far enough that is has always taken the impact. Rubber buoys on the bumper would not be a bad idea though.

 

This information is based on....Pennsylvania law/regulations. Every state is different - so you have to research your own state laws.

In Pennsylvania - you pay for vehicle registration yearly (license plate). You have to pass emissions & safety inspections yearly. Part of the vehicle inspections - is that you carry a valid registration, you have valid insurance and that your vehicle has a clean (regular) TITLE. If you fail inspection, you are given a FIX IT notice and have a certain amount of time to fix it or else your vehicle is considered ILLEGAL to be on the road.

When you're in an accident - your vehicle is assessed (and I'm sure the estimators have 'safety regulations' in mind when they asses) etc. If your vehicle is NOT totaled - and you decide NOT to get the repairs done, it still needs to be legally safe (per inspection standards). Now-a-days - the insurance companies will only give the repair $$ to the shop (not the owner of the vehicle) and they have a bit more control knowing your vehicle was never fixed). Depending on the time frame - you are not necessarily required to have another inspection until your due date. If the damage is obvious from the outside, the cops can/will stop you and give you a FIX IT notice (per say). You are required to get it fixed or they'll revoke your registration (per say).

If your vehicle is TOTALLED, it will be given a SALVAGE TITLE. Regardless if you buy it back or not. Salvage title vehicles are illegal to be on the road.
If you buy it back and want to make it legal to drive on the roads again - you have to apply for a RECONSTRUCTED TITLE of which requires a lot of strict safety inspections and a group of people will review your application and approve/disapprove your application. Once you pass for the Reconstructed title - at that point, they issue you the Recon title and you can register the vehicle and get insurance on it and drive it legally on the road.

I had an old Jeep that was totalled - I bought it back. I did not go thru the process of getting a reconstructed title because the frame was too far bent and it was soooooo much easier to buy another jeep and swap over the parts (Dana 44's, rollcage, suspension, steering, etc). I parted out the rest I didn't need.

My husband and I bought a trailer kit this past summer. We had to put it together ourselves. Because the trailer was not 'factory' installed and didn't have a title .... the state treated it the same way it would as a reconstructed title application. We went thru a series of safety inspections and the state had to approve it before issuing us a title for the trailer. Then, we were able to get a license plate/registration, etc.

In my old neighborhood, back in November 2015, a Chinese guy crashed his 2013 BMW 5-series into a parked 2013 Passat right in front of my house. The airbags in the BMW went off and it had like $18,000 in damage. The insurance company repaired the BMW, but the Passat had like almost ten grand in damage and was totaled.

I am 5'11'' and almost 260 pounds. My Tacoma has the standard bench seat. I am comfortable in my truck with the seat almost all the way back.

One time I let my boss, a 5'3'' Asian woman, drive my truck. I was in the passenger seat and she had to pull the seat up so far that my knees were touching the dashboard.

On a few occasions, I've given the aforementioned boss's ex-boyfriend a ride, and he is 6'4". His knees were almost touching the dashboard.

One time when I had a few too many to drink, my cousin was my designated driver. My cousin is a roughly 5'4'' woman, and when she drove my Taco my knees were touching the dashboard.

 

Yup. That's what happens when you get the smallest taco you can possibly buy. I've known people up to 6'3" that are extremely comfortable in their tacos. We also all have double cabs...so you know, we can adjust our seats independently of one another

 

You let a 5' 3" Asian woman drive your truck?

 

I'm 6'3" and drive an access cab. My head almost touches the roof. If I we're any taller it would be terrible.

My biggest complaint is the damn rear-view mirror blocks half my view most of the time, especially turning right.

 

She's one of my best friends in addition to being my boss, and she's actually quite a good driver.

I'm 6'-4", 265 lbs, almost 60 years old and not nearly as flexible as I once was.

That said, not a problem in the world with getting in/out, or while driving. Wife is 5'-1" and has no complaints (or I'd put her in the bed)

 

I'm 6' 3" and fit perfectly comfortably. But I have a 3rd gen double cab. Even when family rides behind me I'm comfy.

A lot of people have called me crazy for letting an Asian woman drive my truck. Some people would call that a double threat. I personally believe that driving skills are defined by what's on the inside and not on the outside. One of my best friends is Asian and aside from rear-ending somebody when he was a teenager, he's never been in accident since or been pulled over. No tickets or anything.

Anyway, my boss moved here from Nebraska back in 2011 but didn't get her driver's license transferred until 2014. By the time she finally did transfer her license, it had been expired for a month, and she'd misplaced her wallet (never found it). She had to send away to Nebraska for a certified driving record, and Pennsylvania has a grace period of 6 months for expired out-of-state licenses. I drove her to the DMV in my truck. All she had to do was show her birth certificate, social security card, and the driving record, and then take a vision test, and she got a license. She did not have to take a written or road test. It was two days before Christmas and amazingly we were out of the DMV in about an hour.

I asked my boss if she'd like to take her first drive as a Pennsylvania-licensed driver, she said yes, and I tossed her the keys. She had to move the seat almost all the way forward and my knees were pretty much touching the dashboard.

She had been primarily driving a 1999 GMC Safari owned by the bar she manages (the bar used the old van as a rolling billboard for advertisement). Obviously the difference in braking performance between an old GMC Safari and any Tacoma is going to be night and day. One of my boss's biggest complaints when riding with me was that I was a bit hard on the brakes, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. Before we even made it out of the DMV parking lot, my boss was like "God damn, you have good brakes!" Again keep in mind she'd been driving a 15-year old van. She never gave me shit about braking skills again.

 

I'M FINE. It's when someone shorter than me drives and I ride shotgun that I run into problems... Did you just say 9'4"? Are you a basketball player?
