I guess $7k is close enough to $8k for that insurance company.

Tough to tell from the angle of those photos (which is probably the point) but it looks like the frame got tweaked a little. The driver's rear corner of that bed is definitely sitting higher than it should be, but I can't tell if it's all body damage or not. Most of the time these days if the frame is off at all it's enough.

Judging by the angle that bed is sitting at (4th Picture), I'm willing to wager that the frame is also bent.

I think the bed is damaged, not the frame. I know from experience due to my encounter with a drunk driver that a new unpainted rear fender from Toyota is about $600. I know from the time I got rear-ended by a texting driver that rear bumper is about a thousand bucks with parts and labor.

So, that's $600 per fender, and probably another grand for the actual bed. I'd say about $3,000-$4,000 for a complete new Tacoma bed, including parts, paint, and labor.

Even if it isn't bend, this truck could be one hell of a project vehicle for somebody who knows what they're doing!

It was totaled 2 1/2 years ago. So, it was only 3 years old when it was totaled. Insurance companies are all about saving money. There is no way they would total a vehicle that could be repaired for ~50% of value. There's obviously a lot more damage than is visible.

It's been a while, but I thought the math was:
    a) Cost to repair; vs
    b) Insurable value (total) MINUS salvage value
If a) is less than b) they opt to pay for repair,
If it costs them less to just pay out insurable value net of what they get from salvage auction, they opt to treat as a total

Most insurance companies go by 70% of value. If it costs less than 70% to repair it, they fix it. If it's more than 70%, they total it. If a vehicle is worth $10K, it doesn't make sense to spend $10K fixing it. If a vehicle is worth $60K, they'll spend $30K fixing it without even a 2nd thought. It doesn't matter if the air bags are blown or the frame is bent. It's all about the numbers.
