I also did a test to see how easy it is to vacuum this stuff up...

It is worth mentioning that you should point the vacuum's exhaust away from any vehicles, especially the one you are cleaning!

After over a year of problems with my truck's air-conditioning system leaking, my Toyota dealer finally found the problem. About three weeks ago, they added UV dye to the system. Today, during a follow-up, they found dye coming from the condensate hose near the bottom of the firewall. There was a faint but eerie green glow coming from one of my frame rails, and I actually saw this with my own eyes when they brought me into the shop to show me...

I pride myself in being able to do certain things myself when it comes to my truck. My inability to do certain things to my truck stems from my lack of proper equipment and facilities. I know how to change the oil, change a tire, replace tires, and recharge the air-conditioner, among other things...

However, I'm just a 20-something guy living with his parents in a suburban home with a cluttered 2-car garage and a relatively small driveway. My dad will not let me change the oil in the driveway.

That said, a friend of mine who I would consider to be a "DIY God" told me I should stop going to the dealer when I told him that it would cost almost $1,600 for repairs to my Taco's air-conditioner. This was my response to my friend on Facebook...

"I know a thing or two about both cars and HVAC, but I do not feel comfortable removing my dash. I also do not have the equipment necessary to evacuate and recharge the A/C system, which would be required when replacing this part. I HATE going to the dealer, but there are some things I can't do myself. However, please call me if you can do the job for less than $1,500. If you can guarantee the parts and labor for 2 years after the date of service, give me a free loaner vehicle for the 2 days it's expected to take, and pay for any damages or defects in workmanship, then give me a call..."

Yes, I LOATHE taking my truck to the dealer. I live in the Uncommonwealth of Pennsylvania and it's bad enough I have to bring my near-mint Taco to a mechanic every year for a safety inspection and emissions test.

My dad's mechanic, who is a one-man operation, told me he would probably charge about the same as my local dealer and even recommended that I bring it to the dealer. I trust our family mechanic and I would most certainly not bring my truck to another mechanic! I only trust him and the Toyota dealer...

IMO $1,600 is not far off the mark for the dealer it is actually a good price for that amount of work involved to replace the evaporator coil.

$1600 can buy a lot of cans of Freon. How fast does it leak out?

If I was going to go to the dealer for anything its AC work. AC is not something that many shops can do well. They often start throwing parts at it and rack up high costs even if they dont fix the issue.

Dealers are hit or miss like any other repair shop. Members here have experienced dealers screw up a simple oil change. OP, probably the main reason your dad's mechanic refer you to the dealer is because him being a one man shop. There's too much labor and time tied up in your a/c repair that he would be too overwhelmed to take in more business or complete his current less labor intensive repairs. I would shop around for quotes at local shops.

Ever removed carpet from a house that had carpet cleaners sprinkled on it? You end up finding that whatever was sprinkled onto the carpet, that it will find its way through the carpet and rest underneath it.....:puke:

I’d put in a new can every summer for $18 and just live with it.
