So, you'll have to wear a sling for like six weeks?

I only wore the sling for a week after my surgery. I didn’t want to get too stiff. When I started physical therapy I was 2 months ahead of schedule. The othropedist said it was a freak occurrence that I re tore it that quick. I must of caught it just right.

When I was 19, I fractured the radial head of my right elbow...

In late May or early June of 2008, I tripped over a laundry hamper while inning through the upstairs hallway in my parents' old house. I went flying and landed directly on my elbow.

My elbow hurt like crazy, but I figured it was just a really bad sprain.

A couple of days passed and I went on with my life. I was working at CVS at the time, and I was lifting large boxes like it was nothing. I also went on bike rides and did all sorts of strenuous stuff. The pain decreased, but on about the third day, I realized my elbow frozen in a bent position and my skin had turned some pretty nasty colors.

I showed my parents and they took me to get it X-rayed the next day.

This is one of those cases where bureaucracy really pisses me the fuck off; The X-ray technician was this woman in her 40s or 50s, and the X-ray went just fine. My mom and I both looked at my X-ray and saw nothing wrong if I remember correctly.

The X-ray technician said she could not give any opinion on what may or may not be wrong with my elbow even though she could clearly see something that we couldn't, because she wasn't a doctor and could get in trouble. So, the X-ray images were emailed from the medical center where the X-rays were done, to my doctor's office. Then, we had to wait more than 10 minutes for the doctor's office to call us back. When we finally got the call, my worst fears were realized and I was both amazed and incredibly pissed off at the same time. My elbow was indeed broken!

So, a regular physician is obviously capable of diagnosing a broken bone, but generally doesn't have the resources to treat them. The place where I got X-rayed also did not have an orthopedist (at least not back in 2008; My gym is in the same building and they seem to have an orthopedic clinic as of 2018).

So, it was off to an orthopedist in another county...

I was relieved when I found out I wouldn't have to wear a cast at all, but whole situation still sucked royal ass...

For starters, I was not allowed to drive (not that it really mattered because I didn't have a license at the time). Also, keep in mind that this was right at the beginning of summer, and we had rented a beachfront home in Virginia Beach. I was not in a cast, but I was still not allowed to go in the ocean.

I spent about 5 or 6 weeks in a sling, and I can proudly say that was my one and only broken bone!

    @El Duderino

There was a period of roughly three years, between about December 2005 and December 2008, that I consider to be my "dark ages," with December 2006-January 2009 being the worst.

The highlight of that period of time in my life was passing the written test to obtain my learner's permit on the very first try, in December 2005. Very few people I know passed the written test on the first try. For whatever reason, I didn't keep up with driving lessons and I also neglected to realize that a Pennsylvania learner's permit was only good for a year. Yes, you could keep renewing it for years and years as many times as you'd like, but only if you renewed it on or before the expiration date. Once you got past the expiration date, you had to retake the test. My learner's permit expired in December 2006, but I unfortunately did not notice this until probably April or May of 2007.

The summer of 2007 was busy. I graduated for high school, and we had to live with my Grandparents about 40 minutes away from where we lived while our new house was built. So began a period of anxiety and self-loathing that lasted about a year and a half...

I got my learner's permit in December 2005, and then I started suffering from a crushing combination of anxiety, depression, and OCD that could only be managed by prescribed medication (I still take meds today). I don't think I fully got over the anxiety and depression until the spring of 2006. The summer of '06 was actually quite fun. It was my first full year of being able to legally drive a vehicle on a public road (with a licensed adult in the front seat, of course). The 2nd Generation of Tacomas had only been around for a year and a half, and the 2nd Gen that would lead to me joining this forum was still more than three years away from coming off the assembly line in California...

As I said before, the period of time between the spring of 2007 and January 2009 was especially hard for me. I should have been getting a new learner's permit and working toward getting my license, going to college or finding a real job (as in one that wasn't assigned to me by my school's special ed "Intermediate Unit), meeting girls and getting laid, and just enjoying life. Instead, I spent much of that roughly year and a half binging on video games. Sure, I would leave to walk the dog or ride my bike, and I was real friendly with the neighbors, but I had no social life. With no social life, I had no need to drive anywhere and thus no need for a driver's license. It was a very sad time, and one that seems like it was way more than just a decade ago!

Also, back to the present day...

On another note, I like who I work with at the detail shop, and I love the money I'm making. However, I am very quickly getting fed up with having to be at work by 7:50am every Saturday! Technically, all Saturdays are mandatory, but I've gotten about four or five off since I got the job in September (two for car shows in September, one for helping my cousin move in October, and one for a "second Thanksgiving" with family last weekend). My boss has refused to give me anymore Saturdays off this year unless it's an emergency. I fully understand this, and I am doing my absolute damndest to be in on time, but I was written up a couple weeks ago because I was late for the second consecutive Saturday in a row. Luckily, first offenses are just written warnings.

I have every intention of keeping this job for the foreseeable future, but I really miss my Saturdays!

FUN FACT: I've been regularly working Saturdays (and even Sundays) since 2014 when I got the job at Puck, but the earliest I've ever had to come to Puck on a Saturday is about 10am. I prefer going to bed at around midnight and getting around 7 to 9 hours of sleep.

That "tough patch" really seems like a century ago. The worst part of it was having no driver's license, and having to rely on my parents to take me everywhere (this was a year or so before Uber was invented, and several years before it became mainstream; I first used Uber in 2015, more than four years after I finally got my license).

I just love being able to get in my truck and being able to drive wherever the hell I want whenever the hell I want!

My uncle is a cop in New Jersey. Not only is he a cop, but he has been on the force for about 25 years and is a lieutenant.

My uncle, a seasoned police officer who has dealt with more drunk or otherwise impaired drivers than he'd care to remember, believes that DUI checkpoints are unconstitutional! Imagine that!

Like any reasonable human being, he believes that if a LEO sees a motorist do something that gives
him or her reasonable suspicion that the motorist is impaired (swerving in and out of one's lane, lights off, driving slow, etc), then it's perfectly fine to pull that person over for further investigation.

My uncle also believes that DUI checkpoints (or similar suspicionless roadblocks) are unconstitutional and a violation of privacy!

To be honest, the one and only time I encountered a DUI checkpoint, I didn't really feel that "violated." The cop I talked to didn't ask to see my driver's license, registration, and/or proof of insurance. He didn't even ask my name. He didn't ask if I had anything in my truck that he should be concerned about, nor did he bat an eye when he asked me where I was going and I simply said "home."

The thing that pissed me off most about that particular DUI checkpoint was that they were stopping every car on Route 611 in both directions, and my drive home that should have taken no more than 15 minutes took about 40 minutes!

My police officer uncle and I both agree that roving patrols and saturation patrols are a much better allocation of resources!

There have been times when I've got completely annihilated and called an Uber, and then on the drive home, me and my driver will actually see someone on the side of the road doing field sobriety tests or getting arrested for DUI, or a car getting loaded onto a flatbed while a police car waits nearby.

I see this, and I start laughing, because even though I'm hammered, I know that in the morning I'll still have my dignity, and my driver's license won't be suspended!
