They find cars from 1900 or so and start them and drive them. Anything can be fixed and made to run and keep running. I'm hoping to get a few thousand out of my truck before I have to replace something ridiculously $$$ on it.

Apparently you've already forgotten about the (feared) year too thousand (Y2K) debacle.

well after 999,999 the trip odometer will do just fine for keeping track of maintenance. Its not like the exact mileage will be a big factor in reselling :D

Did you just use the phrase "after 999,999 miles" and the word "resale" in the same post?

Yup, at least through the 100 series Toyota offered refresh kits and the engine blocks were designed with enough extra meat to be bored out three times.

I don't think that the engineers of the odometers ever figured that any their trucks would ever go 1,000,000 miles!
Bet they figured a 6 digit odometer would be more than enough.

That's about dates, not a regular number. Also that really was a joke honestly.

I have been in IT since the 80's. It wasn't a joke, but people took it seriously and the critical stuff was remediated in time. It did turn out to be a non-event, but that took a fair amount of work (it was a profitable time for my company).

On my first day of work at the detail shop (back in September 2018), I was pleasantly surprised to learn that one of my supervisors was a guy I went to high school with. I hadn't seen this particular guy since 2007, but I had nothing but good memories of him. He also happens to own a barcelona red 2010 DCSB TRD that he bought new.

Within a day or two of starting the job, my former classmate-turned supervisor told me that another guy I thought highly of had overdosed on heroin and died earlier in 2018.

This guy, a kid named John Irvine, was British and came to the States with parents at a young age. By the time I knew him, he was an American citizen and his British accent had disappeared. However, he was lovingly known as "Johnny English" by his fellow students because of his backstory. His daily driver was a blue 1998 Toyota 4Runner, and he was working as a cabinetmaker's apprentice. He had a lot of promise, but sometime after June 2007 he started using heroin.

    HEROIN IS EVIL!

First off, I'd like to say that I've never noticed this...

I parked behind my dad's Yukon in the driveway, and he had to move my truck so he could get out and go to work (it was early and I was still asleep). My dad said that while backing up, it seemed like he really had to ride the brake because the truck "felt like he was pushing the gas" if he didn't. My dad feels that the engine idle while in drive is normal...

Anyway, heroin seems to be killing a lot of people I knew...

One of my dad's Navy buddies has three kids, two sons and a daughter, or at least he had...

The daughter died in a car accident, and the younger son died of a drug overdose :(

We lived in the same neighborhood from 1997 to 1998, and played together from time to time, so this hits me rather hard!

Okay, so this is the Uber Eats story to top 'em all. I unintentionally broke into a closed McDonald's!

I worked a full day at Fred Beans, and almost three hours at Puck, and then I went online with the Uber Driver app. I got a hit literally just as I pulled into my driveway. I'd literally just shut off the engine when the order came in from the McDonald's in Hilltown, so I started the truck back up and headed back out into the pouring rain.

As I arrived at the McDonald's, something seemed weird. There were no cars in the parking lot, and it seemed strangely dark. However, there were still lights on inside. I parked the truck, got out, and headed to the entrance. The door was unlocked, so I walked in and yelled "Hello?!?!" multiple times. Thinking that maybe the employee(s) were incapacitated somewhere, I checked the restrooms. As soon as I opened the door to the ladies room and called out, the alarm went off. I instinctively ran out of the McDonald's and got in my truck, not wanting to be inside the building if the cops showed up.

I thought about waiting until the police arrived and/or calling 911, but then I got an order from a Popeye's around the corner and decided to just leave. Popeye's turned out to be closed as well (sounds like Uber is having a serious miscommunication issue with certain restaurants), even though the "OPEN" sign was on and all the interior lights were as well. Popeye's was locked and nobody appeared when I knocked. I cancelled the Popeye's order and it was at this point that I got a request to pick up from the McDonald's in Souderton. I passed the Hilltown McDonald's on the way to Souderton and two SUVs parked outside the front door, a black Tahoe and a blue RAV4. I realized that the black Tahoe was probably the police and decided to stop and explain why the alarm had gone off even though there was no obvious sign of a break-in.

The cop was inside the McDonald's doing a search, but there was a guy in the RAV4 who turned out to be another Uber Eats driver. He had gotten a request from the same guy, a "Gino M."

The officer came out of the McDonald's, and I explained to him that I was an Uber Eats driver and had accidentally set off the alarm because I thought the place was open. The officer immediately started laughing, and all was good. No guns pointed at me, no request to show ID. The cop believed my story and managed to reach the manager of that Mickey D's to come and secure the place.

The other Uber driver attempted to contact the mysterious "Gino", but the number was invalid...?

Also, at some point I decided it might be a good idea to confirm that the Souderton McDonald's was actually open. After getting a busy signal on the first call and an endlessly ringing phone on the second, I came to the conclusion that all Mickey D's locations in that area had closed for New Year's Eve, and cancelled the order.

So yeah, that was my evening. Oh, and I put an extra 18 miles on my Tacoma during that wild goose chase...
