I and my family lived in our motorhome for seven months after Hurricane Rita. It can be done, but you have to be mentally tough to make the home to small space transition. The smaller the tougher. Sometimes you just need to sit in your recliner, looking out your window or reading the Sunday paper in your own home. That is what you give up. Still, if you have the income to travel, having different scenery every morning makes up for a lot. We have spent a lifetime acquiring the trappings of a lifetime of hard work. And the lesson we have learned is this: You don't own all that stuff. It owns you. I spend all my time keeping this stuff up, maintaining it, and much less actually enjoying it. Not to mention taxes on that shit. Every day I wish I had less to say grace over. Like this guy. Material possessions don't bring happiness, they bring upkeep and unneeded responsibility. Do yourself a favor and put some of it in the bank. Time, not stuff, is your most valuable possession.

Since we’re on the subject, I thought the age range would be born in the 90’s or 2000’s?

    I want to be.
@ColoradoTJ are you looking for a room mate who won’t pay bills, leaves his dirty silverware everywhere, leaves the toilet un-flushed and eats all your food and doesn’t know how to his laundry?

But I’ll be sure to get a job at Starbucks and tell you all the stories about the “crazy” people

Nope. The roommate would be homeless regardless of gender, generation, or relation to me.

It gets old because we are facing a bit of a crisis in North America and people are concerned, so it’s on people’s mind. Its mostly just beginning, but the issue is the lack of people to take on the responsible (difficult) jobs that make our society function. The difficulty of life can be largely avoided by these persons due to the monetary safety net established by the last couple generations. The interesting thing to me, is that some challenge and endeavour in life tends to give your life meaning, and I meet a lot of young people who are either desperate to apply meaning to their lives by ticking off a “bucket list”, or have become nihilists.

In past eras.....a young person “hitting the road”, had a stick over his shoulder with a sack tied to it. These days it’s in a $30K truck. The scenarios are different because we live in an age where a huge amount of wealth is stored in the family coffers of the baby boomers. This wealth is slated to be passed on. We are now witnessing the effect of that on a generation of children that grew up without any actual hardship, and with a guaranteed future “graveyard payday”, coming of age. It’s an interesting social experiment that I find it fascinating on some level, but apologize if my opinions are not popular. I think things will work themselves out. Immigration and increased competition from intrepid people from other societies is an inevitability.

    Anyways......my thoughts....I’ll leave it be.

There is a whole movement of people doing this. Many have seen how incredibly happy and prosperous their parents have been playing by the typical American script. Yea, they don't want that for themselves. We talk to them, and meet them everyday. Many are well educated and have jobs they can do from the road. No, it's not for everyone, but living this way puts you in touch with life in a way that few ever experience driving to their daily mundane jobs and paying their mortgages. When I was this guy's age I lived for a whole summer out of a little Honda car and traveled. I met people, shared ideas, suffered some hardships, and learned a lot of lessons. It changed my outlook on life, and what was really important forever. Since then I have lived off grid for many extended periods. Just a few years ago I spent many months alone in the backcountry of Wyoming in vehicles. I've sacrificed a lot of wealth and comfort to do what I have done, but I wouldn't trade a single day of it for a cubicle. Every dime I have had over my life was earned the hard way. Now I own a business serving like minded people, but I hope my final days are on the road. In a couple of weeks, we will be talking to 15,000 or more like minded "dirt bags" at Expo West in Flagstaff who understand.

There are hundreds of awesome careers that don’t require working in a cubicle or staying in one place. That’s a tired cliche that is repeated as often as the millennial cliche.

If people want to live a certain way, and it doesn’t cost me as a productive tax payer, by all means...live it up the “simple life” way and go experience everything. I recommend traveling as much as one can. Both me and the better half have traveled all over the world and even lived in different countries for extended periods of time (over 2 years).

In CO, it’s becoming a serious problem, and costing the state a lot of money. Hundreds of families and individuals are crowding up open space areas/public land. Part of the problem is housing is astronomical in CO. I just got a notice from the ol’ county clerk and recorder that my taxes are going up. For some reason, my home value went up $200,000 in value in 12 months. (Total bullshit). This is in my hood and I find this disturbing....

That’s a really nice RV, Tow rig, Tacoma’s for life cost right there.

So were do these “millennials” fall into this? I have 9 of these working with me right now. Some of the hardest working people I’ve had the pleasure of working with.
Maybe I’m just lucky or just hire the right millennials. Who knows. We have total dirtbags in all generations...that’s a fact. I remember hearing it about Gen Xers. Money could be a motivator and we pay well.

Personally, I find it hilarious when people complain about these people that:
    -don’t flush toilets
    -don’t pay rent
    -won’t move out
    -play video games all day
    -won’t work

What in the hell does that say about you? I’ve never experienced any of those things. I set expectations and follow through. It’s pretty simple really. My 10/7 year olds almost have this all figured out. Almost. By the time they’re 18, they can make choices for themselves.

This thread is getting ridiculous. But I’ll personally stop calling out millennials or having resentment towards their generation when they stop crossing the street with their little heads buried in the phone, stop slowing down traffic because they’re busy having a texting conversation. Or figure out how to do the hard-to-do parts of any job on their own without being spoon fed. I don’t really care about whether they are well off enough to attend expensive music festivals only to find out they don’t really exist. Darwinism eventually will naturally sort out those who should and shouldn’t exist.

Couple things I noticed...not judging what he does if that's what makes him happy, just things I noticed in the story that made me turn my head sideways and say "huh??"

He made his drawer out of 3/8" plywood and 1/2" screws, so he says....but I assume he means 1 1/2" screws.

His fridge is in the passenger back seat area....oh wait, no...it's in the bed...but wait I need the bed for my bed, so I have to find other places for those "utilities". Again, I'm just assuming, but I guess the story is just out of order.

At any rate, definitely not judging, just things I noticed. Good for him if that's what he wants to do. Hell, if I thought I could do it, I might try, but I'm far too old to be doing that shit any more...not to mention, I need to stay somewhat "in place" for my son/family/etc.

    Interesting read.

Surprised by all the negativity, I get it he is not a pioneer of the lifestyle.... but at the same time he didn't go out and buy a RTT to drive around town and use it 3% of the time..... To each their own and if he can manage to live the way HE wants, then cheers to him.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed the fridge thing. I am chalking it up to poor writing.

My only issue with the newer generation, is the expecting the world owes them. My one example, someone at my school, got a long term sub job for a few months. Then applied for a teaching position, then got very angry stating they were screwed because they didn't get the position, after all they did sub for 3 months.

OH, I have another. At a conference a few weeks ago, some one stated they hated being a millennial because the older generations won't listen to them. I told them, I felt the same way growing up, they looked at me and said "Ya, but you don't understand what it's like."

I don't care when your born, you get respect by showing respect.
