I used to say the same things as others about hybrids. I would never spend money on one because they were too complex, CVT's, etc. My in-laws gave us their 2012 Prius V when it had 80k. It now has 135k and my wife beats it mercilessly. We have had no issues at all. I did change all the fluids at 100k and change the oil every 5k. That car is a tank and is honestly built better then my Tacoma in some ways. I was gushing over the quality of the coolant hose clamps the other day.

Surfing the Prius forums showed plenty of examples deep into the 200-300k range with no issues. There are some stories of a car or two in the 600's. I had found aftermarket nickel metal hydride battery packs for $1700.

Basically, the RAV4 Prime is on our short list if we can find a way to kill this car in a way that is not economical to repair, which I have not identified yet lol.

Yea the rav4 prime is a great set up , but it's expensive and you can't find one around here. I think over a 10k mark up over a regular rav, not sure if you would ever break even. But the other guys got me thinking about the cvt transmission.

I think Toyota CVT's have a good rep. I know Subarus had some issues. I wouldn't want it if I were moving any kind of weight, and it is a very different driving sensation, but it's not hard to get used to. For the purpose of these kinds of cars, I think they make a lot of sense. I have seen on the Prius forums that people will neglect them, or dealers say they don't get serviced, then they have issues, but the forum wisdom is to change the fluid every 30-50k. They use ATF that is shared with the diff, like a transaxle.
