    That is a great report....but oil is still cheap. It seems like you've got a keeper and I would keep that OCI where you have it. But that is just me.

    @bryanh69

    You're keeping an open mind . . Good! Now if you knew you could safely get to 7 or 8K miles, wouldn't be that be worth the time/money savings? You still have "peace of mind" b/c you can see right before you the engine is not wearing!

    Also not thought of is used engine oil is an environmental hazard, and oil reclamation is not cheap. Cost is passed on the the consumer at all Dealer, quick change, and Auto Zone O'Reillys reclamation tanks.

    @fnbrowning Up until that motor is out of warranty at 100k I would not go to anything not stated in the owners manual.

    And I absolutely do think of the environmental implications. My county in Va has a public recycling station for oil and antifreeze. Really handy!

    The 2015 Toyota TACOMA (4.0L 6 -cyl Engine Code 1GR-FE 0) is warranted to 100 thousand miles?? :confused: I was never informed by the dealer when I bought mine used. Is that all the parts that are splashed by oil in the engine, or the entire powertrain?? Please cite your source as i need to be able to take this to my salesman at the Toyota dealer!

    There are a number of "synthetic" oils that start with a mixture of mineral oils.

    Around 2004(?), Mobil filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau in the US claiming that Castrol was engaging in false advertising by calling Syntec "full synthetic" since it was now being made with Group III base oil. Castrol was able to present enough "evidence" to convince the NAD that Group III base oil could legitimately be called synthetic, so they ruled in Castrol's favor. This ruling has no "legal" standing. It merely means that as far as the NAD is concerned, an oil company is not falsely advertising an oil as "full synthetic" if that oil is made from Group III base oil. Abiding by the NAD's guidelines, a Group III oil can be ADVERTISED under those guidelines as a synthetic.

    TL;DR Some synthetics are made with petroleum base oils that were modified and called the same as synthetics using Polyalphaolefin(PAO) base stocks, the most common major synthetic based oil base.
    FWIW; at my 5000 mile drain interval, I will pull an oil analysis on the "synthetic" 5W-30 the dealer installed, while switching to Mobil 1 0w-30 Advanced Fuel Economy which actually has base synthetic oils necessary for more wear control and detergency at higher Oil Change Intervals. I expect it will have excellent results in the Toyota engine, given the quality base stocks used.

    Thank you. When I think of, and was speaking of "faith" in this scenario, the meaning that first comes to mind is: "I have faith that Toyota Engineers picked a 5,000 mile interval for the reminder lamp for a reason: and not just a roll of the dice. To wit: When I'm up in the air in the left seat and occasionally my sister in the right, with family members and/or friends riding in the back now and then, I have complete "faith" that the hardworking A&P wizards working their magic on the ground keeping the aircraft flight-worthy are dotting all the "I's" and crossing all the "T's" to get me to my destination and back: I don't even worry about it. Likewise I have faith that the ATC folks are watching out for me and when they call me with a request to change course for some reason, or divert me way out of the way to avoid a cell: I assume they know what they are doing. ...and when they say "N12345XX, cleared for take-off runway 36L: Expedite"", I expedite!: (and I'm already on the gas when I acknowledge the instruction)

    I'm curious, and you don't have to answer. You may be from my generation cohort, and comfortably resistant to change.

    I've written some excellent words on the changes in lubrication. I've hinted that there have been some significant advances in the decade since your beloved Toyota engineers set that "reminder lamp" you love. Yet, yet, you feel comfortable arguing against modern oil analysis {You think is a "roll of the dice", and you couldn't be more in error!:rolleyes:} And you deliberately ignore the changes in the chemical state of lubrication to set your argument against change.

    I mean, it's your money to throw away in the used oil reclamation tank. I like to keep mine in my wallet, but I guess for your instance I will quote from the depression generation that had a saying, "If I had your money, I'd throw mine away!" :rofl:

    The manual is not written 100% by engineers, its going to have input from marketing, legal and some of it is just institutional momentum (thats what weve always done).

    For example I know a guy that wrote manuals and white papers for the electronics industry. He was not what I would call a smart man but his stuff sounded good and he just used the materials from the other engineers that worked on the project and past projects to throw things together. I dont think he ever actually designed or built anything.

    The most important part about the oil analysis isnt what they say the oil life is but what they find in the oil, you can see the trends in contaminants and sorta get an idea of how the engine is doing over time and maybe fix a small problem before it becomes a big problem. Start seeing some coolant or higher levels of bearing material, plan for a more indepth look before a piston says hello world. Fuel contamination is high or starting to trend up, faulty injector or running too rich maybe.
