It seems as if you use the right components in combination, then you won't have problems, regardless of the truck. I agree no 2 trucks are equal, but if you don't try different combinations, then you'll never know which works best with a given truck. I know that can be expensive but it's doable and I think there can be a happy medium without such modifications. When I went to 35s and eventually 37s on my old taco, I had to make the conscious choice to perform a SAS on the truck, but ultimately capability and clearance were my deciding factors. Sure I could've chopped the mount, pounded the seam and cut other things out of the way but ultimately it was the simplest and most economic choice and when it was done I couldn't be happier, and I spent way less $$ than trying to make it work with the IFS.

Why didn't you just go with a 7" wheel or less backspacing? Mine is from experience also, maybe I get lucky, but sometimes I don't and that's why I change my mods when problems arise. Sometimes things just don't come out the way we envision them, and then it's time to try another route or setup.

They are TRD 4Runner Trail Premium wheels 17X7 with 4.75 backspacing and I picked them because in my minds eye, I assumed they would clear the UCAs and fender liners and not stick out too far. Maybe I got lucky but it turned out exactly as I envisioned it would. If it didn't, I was going to try something else or a 255/85R16 on a 7" wheel with similar BS.

This summer in Colorado I did these trails in 265/70-17 KO2 (C) on TRD PRO rims, no lift:
    Sante Fe Peak
    Chihuahua Gulch
    Saints John
    Deer Creek
    Red Cone
    Radical Hill
    Governor Basin
    Mineral Creek
    Engineer Pass
    Hurricane Basin
    California Pass
    Hurricane Pass
    Corkscrew Pass
    Black Bear Pass
    Imogene Pass
    Yankee Boy Basin
    Red Mountain

Mind you, these aren't hardcore trails with major boulders like say Poughkeepsie Gulch or Holy Cross, but it is 4 wheeling. But I guess it depends on what kind of 4 wheeling you want to do. Frankly I see way more modded and more capable vehicles on trails than my lil' stock TRD OR Tacoma, and they'll have a much easier time with obstacles than I do. I have to take particular lines and avoid some of the larger obstacles. My general understanding is you will want to go 33s or 35s with a wider wheel and 15s and lift, etc.. Our trucks are pretty capable stock (TRD OR) though, the locker really helps.

Hmm I thought they were a higher backspacing then that but I haven't looked at them in a long time. I had to go with a 4.5BS or less to clear my spindle gussets and help clear the rear shocks with out needing a 3" wheel spacer. I don't see many aftermarket wheels coming in a 7" wide. Or atleast the ones I looked at any. @Member1Zillion
