What would be a good performance chip for a 4.0L tacoma that improves gas mileage plus horsepower/torque???

There are no chips for the 4.0 Tacoma. APR makes a piggy back computer that works great but it is about $1100.

I own a UNICHIP performance chip. I don't have any official numbers unfortunately, They claim an extra 25 - 27 HP and an extra 1-2 MPG. As far as my own personal opinion of it? I love it :D

When I flick the on switch, it hauls ass, when I flick the off switch, it hauls slightly less ass.

I also have an AFE stage 2 CAI and a magnaflow cat-back. When I ordered my UNICHIP I got it with a Map including those two upgrades for a better tune.

Chips do nothing they only make you feel like they're doing something.

Not always true. Good chips like Jet Chip made a big improvement on vehicles that actually used EPROM chips in the ECU. But now that technology is outdated.

    • The Plug n' Play harness features factory plugs and connecters for a seamless fit
    • Easily plug the Unichip Performance Chip into your vehicle's ECU in a matter of minutes

    Description

Liberate your vehicle and let it run free whether it’s stock or modified. Unichip performance chip control modules are built vehicle specific and dyno-tuned for aftermarket mods like cold air intake and performance exhaust. Auto makers saddle their vehicles with sluggish ECU settings to appease the average driver. You’re not the average driver—get the Unichip, lift those restrictions and uncage your vehicle’s full potential.

Not just a chip, Unichip is a full-functioning computer that safely maximizes performance. The Unichip piggybacks your ECU—plugging right into factory connectors—where it receives, modifies and resends the signal; never altering or reprogramming factory settings. This frees up 100% of your engine’s available power 100% of the time.

2 timing maps adjust for octane ratings and desired performance levels with an in-cab switch. You can also expect optimized fuel mileage along with the intense power and torque gains. And, your Unichip Performance Module boasts a 1-year warranty.

If you are getting that low of MPG then you need to change your driving habits. See below for my average that includes offroading, drag racing and daily driving.

The Unichip unit is plug and play.

    • Add's up to 27hp & 26ft-lb .
    • Easily plugs into the stock ECU & ECU harness in minutes , no programming necessary .
    • Realizes the full potential of Aftermarket add-on's like Cold-Air-Intakes & exhaust systems , as each kit comes pre-mapped for the exact set-up of each car or truck.
    • No end-user tuning necessary , just plug the kit into the car & you're ready to go.
    • Easily upgradeable for future add-on's.
    • Each kit comes with two maps : a low octane performance map & a high octane performance map, switchable from within the vehicle.
    • Fully tuneable by a Unichip Custom Tuner for customized add-on's . This basically means that the Engine Management System in your ride is now as tuner friendly as the most advanced Standalone systems in the world , without sacrificing any of the factory features. This feature is unmatched by any reflash-tuning or other similar product.
    • Plug 'n Play harnesses are fully Flux capable - purchase Flux when you purchase the Plug 'n Play kit or upgrade later - Flux simply plugs into the Unichip Plug 'n Play harness.
    • Plug 'n Play kits are removed from the vehicle in minutes , returning the vehicle to stock tuning , without leaving a footprint of ever having been modified (a feature which reflash-tuning cannot match).
    • ROADSPEED-LIMIT Removal now available . Write : "Remove roadspeed limiter" in the comments section of the checkout . This feature is only available on this website.

Be sure and pencil out how much money you'll save on gas if you get 1mpg or even 2mpg  better gas mileage, and compare that to the cost of the chip. Make sure you do apples to apples comparison and if the chip only gets those numbers by using premium gas.

Oh, and if they say "up to" - well that's a maximum improvement not a minimum improvement. Odds are to get that they added other performance improving parts to the truck, measured, and then snapped in their chip and remeasured.
