I've been wanting a performance exhaust for a while now. My truck isn't stock (details below) and I have the Doug Thorley LT headers on it now. I've been wondering about a custom Y-pipe that is pulse tuned straight into a free flowing muffler (or two). Check the picture. I think my engine is breathing pretty well now with the CAI and header mods. Just wondering if I should take it further.

I don't want to wreck my normal drive-ability and/or low end torque with this exhaust idea. What do you guys think I should do? Any recommendations?

Yeah, that picture came from APR. I don't need all the fancy SS tubing and I recall the Y-pipe alone was $850. I figured I could get a shop in town to fab one up for me. Or I could fab one up with some short sections of pre-bent exhaust tubing. I just don't want to invest in this project and be disappointed with the results..

    Doug Thorley Y-pipe?

What about my concerns about the low end?

Any additional insight to help me with this?

Well, my budget is $500 but that's probably not realistic with my goals. My goals are to add performance by letting my f/i engine breathe better, not be too loud and not sound raspy. I also live in CO where the air is THIN so I'm under the impression exhaust mods would help me a lot.

    Here's what I'm thinking:

Forget the DT Y-pipe, no one seems to like it
    Buy a URD Y-pipe (ouch$)
Fab up the rest of my exhaust
Put in a resonator + muffler
    Cut off pipe after axle

Basically make SuperWerty's setup- that sounded GOOD!

I need to ask him what mufflers those are and pipe diameters. It will be a project for sure...

I have a URD Y Pipe and I like the sound and results. I inquired into APR and that would only work with a 4x2, will not work with 4x4 and from their response, they do not have plans to engineer to work for 4x4.

YEP APR doesn't fit the 4x4. It does not clear the transfer case.

The URD looks preety good but i don't like the routing Under the tranny!

A guy on XRU reworked it to make it fit. Not worth it in the end, in my opinion.

Do you know of any pictures of the URD Y-pipe on a 4X4? I didn't even think about that- focusing on the cost of it..

It does route under the transmission pan (4x4 model) with about an inch or so clearance. I've read around and others did not seem to have any issue with the temps. For peace of mind, I wrapped my URD y pipe with DEI titanium wrap where the pipe crosses under the transmission pan. I did quite a bit of reading on exhaust wraps and pros/cons. For a non racing/extreme use applications, I think it is fine in my opinion to control heat for the specific purpose of this y pipe and transmission arrangement.

I monitor my trans temps and have not seen any noticeable increase in transmission oil operating temperatures over the stock setup.

Agree, not worth the work and it likely defeats the "pulse tuning" design of the APR y pipe. The URD y pipe is fine, really like the throatier sound, however no butt dyno improvements.
