I have a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 and am looking to give it some more power. Besides a cold air intake, what are some available options? I've looked at turbochargers and superchargers but am reluctant to buy that right now given that I would probably have to put a new exhaust and possibly re-gear it to get the maximum efficiency from the product. Sorry if this thread has been made, couldn't find one. tacomaworld.jpg

Where did you get those running boards from?

They look like N Fab step bars. But they look like they they're for a double cab since that truck isn't a access cab.

You are correct! They belong to a 2005 Tacoma but I cut them and made them fit mine and was able to weld on some mounts that I could bolt to the frame. They're pretty convenient as well because the back step acts as a bed step

Yeah I noticed that. I like how you can use it as a bed step. Good deal! Getting off subject but oh well

Under most applications, a cold air intake is mostly noise.

Agree that you would need to upgrade the entire exhaust system to gain maximum value from a forced induction kit. Some kits may also require an electronics package to adjust fueling/timing mapping.

For normal use, not sure you need to re-gear anything...

@Voyager I've heard that messing around with the programming aspect of it doesn't make a noticeable difference unless you have some type of forced induction.

Cold air intake won't do anything, if you want real power that you can feel then you want to go with a supercharger (or turbo).

You don't have to regear with a supercharger, but you should probably look into upgrading your spark plugs, fuel pump and adding a 7th injector kit if going with the TRD s/c.

A fully upgraded exhaust (including performance headers) will net you some power gains, but again...it will be 10 fold if you add a supercharger to the mix.

Other than that the best way to get more out of your engine would be to shed unnecessary weight from your truck. But most of us on here are constantly looking to add weight, so that's not always a viable option.

This is true. A $700 programmer for the 3.4 on a 91oct tune will get you a max of 4-6hp according to unichip and JET.

that's what I said. if he goes with FI...it's best to compliment the system with several other components...one being an electronics package. you could probably get away with a stand alone turbo or supercharger at low boost, but to get serious power, you have to augment the FI with lots of things.

I just swapped out my steel wheels for some new SCS F5's, shaved 10 lbs off each wheel.. truck is definitely a lot perkier when accelerating.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't:

From what I understand rotational, unsprung weight makes an even bigger difference.. especially during acceleration.

Lighter tires most definitely, my heavy ass E rated tires dont do me any favors as far as acceleration is concerned...but the supercharger helps to make up for it :D
