I'm sure most of you have seen this, but I thought it was kind of slick. Thinking about ways to tie down the front of the canoe / kayak.

That's just what I've been looking for! I don't trust the ones that are just held in place by the hood. Thanks for posting!

The rubber insert ones work pretty good. You dont want too much pull. Just us a small line with a cam lock, not like your using a ratching tie strap. I sometimes use nothing up front and on the freeways at 65 its fine. An 18ft canoe hangs out there a bit too.

I like the idea of these straps, but theyd be pretty nasty just living in there with all the dirt roads I drive down. Theyd probably have embedded dirt in them that would wear down the paint on the hood edge.

I was going to do grommets too, but I thought the pressure from the washers was enough. They are plenty strong for the application. I have two loops close to the windshield and two loops by the lights. Holes already there!

This is the webbing I used. I had a ton of leftover from a chair project.

I use one of my retired 18” slings made for rock climbing. I put one on each side and then fold them down when not in use.

Ditch light brackets work well for the tie down point, too. Plus they don’t rub the paint like webbing can.

That webbing is going to wear through the paint on the hood in no time. Put some rubber or something between it and the hood

No modern boat needs front tie-downs like that. That's the shit you needed to lash down a shitting 1970s' canoe. Today's boats don't need that crap.

Oh yeah, wind stopped lifting boats off roofs in 1979… my 70s canoe can handle being strapped down tight enough to not need the front strap. My 2022 composite boat would be crushed if I strapped it down tight enough not to need the front line. WTF!

Yep, put them on every truck so far.
Tying down front and rear painters gives you a visual on your boat. You can spot any shifting or issues before something tragic happens. I use spare webbing off of cam straps for the loops.

Does anyone know if it's legally required anywhere to have front & rear tie downs?

Honestly, not sure about legal requirements, but for me, common sense points in the direction of yes.

‘Secured’ mean different things to different folks.
Some people don’t worry about their boats much either. I’m guessing they’ve never had one come off on the highway before.

My kayak is 16ft long, it doesn't go out of my driveway without fore and aft straps in place. It makes me cringe to see people driving with a boat on their roof without them, I give these folks a wide berth. I like this idea, have never thought of it. I always hook to the tow hook on the front and the hitch in the rear.

I was almost killed when 2 kayaks blew off the roof of a Land Cruiser in front of me. The idiot owner never knew what happened since he didn’t have bow or stern lines.

Everyone should know the truckers hitch knot, only takes a minute to secure your loads

    Fantastic idea!

Can I offer an idea? Get a washer/tab like below and put it on top with the flat side towards the fender. Run the webbing under that washer with the exposed part towards the fender, then run the strap around the sheet metal and bolt it on the bottom. Basically take yours but bolt it on top as well, with a washer/tab with a flat side.
This doubles up on the mounting and pinches the webbing, helping to prevent the hole from ripping out and prevents the sharp sheet metal from wearing on the webbing. The flat side of the triangle washer then holds the webbing across its whole width spreading the load. Running it towards the fender side also lowers (but does not remove) the pressure against the hood.

Like half of it flew off or what? Wasnt there other tie downs on there? How could it fully fly off?

Maybe the fool had just bungie cords or something.

Mine would have to bend in half and rip apart to come loose from the tie downs.

Wait, truckers knot, your using rope and not tie downs???
