In a pinch, it's better than nothing. These blankets are surprisingly dense (way heavier than a jacket) and velcro around the line so it doesn't fall off.

If you don't want to buy one now, I have one that can be used for the upcoming trip, but I'd recommend getting one sooner rather than later.

After going with @El Dahs and @stairgod on Sunday (and getting myself stuck a few times) I learned quite a bit about recovery. Big shout out to Mitch and Greg. We stacked rocks, used a high lift, used a snatch strap, and winched me out a few times. It was a great learning experience. There is so much more for me to learn and honestly I can't wait to get some more recovery action in.

To all those guys who want to have a recovery practice day in a parking lot, you're nuts. Nothing beats on the trail recovery experience. You won't be able to simulate trail conditions in a parking lot at all. Get out there and wheel!! Push your limits with more experience guys. Know that they will not put you in harms way.

They also have pockets to add weight if you want.

I would recommend adding weight to it though. For it to work as intended, it needs weight to absorb the energy released by the breaking winch cable.

The warn blanket I have is pretty heavy with no pockets, so hopefully that’s enough should my winch line snap. That’d be a bad day if that ever happened.

That's a good point. I had that silly idea for Last Big Bash, but you (right now) and others who opposed it, are completely right: Nothing beats on trail experience!
Reason I was saying that before it was, since I have very limited off road experience (complete noob), I wanted to be kind of prepared on what to do "in case shit happens". Doesn't matter, didn't happen.
And yes, I would like to see @stairgod @Subway4X4, @El Dahs live in (recovery) action, but I don't think that's going to happen either, because my taco is not going to be black ready.. . Still waiting patiently for a video of @stairgod winching himself backwards ( :boink: @Blackout14).
I don't have time to drive 3 hours for a full day of recovery classes, heck I don't even have time host rent to go Wheeling... So for now I'll stick to reading about you guys having fun on trails, and watching pretty pictures and videos whenever you choose to post them :burnrubber::mudding:

@BastekFX was with me on greens.

We were more concerned for his health than the trail. Hyperventilating was the challenge of the day.

Hey guys @bski22 @Redmann @EatSleepTacos @ADV4R and whoever else is going the 13th--- I'm out for this one, made a total bonehead move and straight up didn't check my calendar before thinking the coast was clear to join. Clearly it wasn't. No way in hell I'm going to make it that weekend unless you change it to Sunday the 14th which would still be a long shot.

That said, maybe we hit Rausch sometime in Feb? I could probably pull off a weekend spending Saturday with @Skell working on the 4R bumper then putting it to the test at RC on Sunday...should that work for everyone of course

    Oh. I know you're a Noob.

I was talking about my dad and his IH Scout II.

    He is The Master.

He bought the Scout as a gift for himself when he retired from the Navy. He shipped it from San Diego to the Philippines. He could do anything and everything with that truck. Jungles, mountains, rivers. You name it, he got that truck through it.

Is it necessary for synthetic rope? (This blanket)

    For safety, absolutely YES.

The synthetic rope, although lighter than aircraft cable, can still store significant energy during a pull. PLUS you need to be concerned about any metal hardware that can break loose at the attachment point (winch line hook, shackle, etc.) Those are deadly missiles when they break loose.

@stairgod and @The Hunter has a different opinion on this. But I stand by my opinion.

ALSO, a dampener/damper (used interchangeably) or two can be and should be used on a snatch strap recovery, to dampen the kinetic energy release in case something goes south in that recovery effort.
