Potential future 1st gen tacoma owner here.
I've read about the poorly designed suspension and catastrophic LBJ failures, and it got me worried. I know there are a few solutions already (uniball conversion, SAFS, long travel kit, and simply just keeping a close eye on the LBJ and replacing with OEM every so often) but I am curious, is there a better permanent solution for a stock daily driver?
Specifically, I was thinking does anyone make/can fabricate an aftermarket spindle and LCA that is similar to OEM but designed in a way so that the LBJ is being compressed instead of under tension? That way, if it were to fail, it wouldn't result in a dangerous catastrophic failure on the highway. Just curious.

For a stock daily driver, just replace them on time and you can more or less completely forget about them. It’s a $200 replacement every like 75-100k miles, really not a big deal.

Nearly all failures are trucks with 200k+ miles on 20+ year old factory LBJs.

There is the uniball conversion kit for the first gens, pretty pricey tho :)

I've started to call them based on age. If its 20 years or more its a time bomb now. 15 years should be done when possible, 10 years start to plan on it.

There's no play or warning, we've checked out ball joints with 3 different techs just to have it come lose weeks later.

Any aftermarket solution actually lasts less time we find.

Depends on your usage. The more you offroad, the more frequent you should be changing them. Uniball suck IMO and depending on geographical location, they’re more prong to damage due to road salt.

Permanent solution will be the LBJ elimination. It’s :spending:

Oh ok. I suppose I can live with that... Seeing all these pics of catastrophic LBJ failures has made me paranoid I guess haha!

Cut the entire front IFS off for a solid axle. Not worth it due to price but it’s a permanent solution to LBJ failure

Oh. It would be a daily driver, so SAS is a no go for me.

I’ve read a lot on the Forum about the LBJ failure. My 2001 2WD, 5 lug has 88K miles, certainly beyond the 5, 10, 15, 20 year mark but below mileage for the LBJ failure. Question…… does the LBJ failure apply to both 2WD and 4WD or are the front suspensions different? Should I change mine soon as a preventive measure or am I getting nervous over something that is far in the future?

I think oversized wheels and tires doesn’t help anything.

I thought “doesn’t help anything” means it contributes.
