That wouldn't go over well at all because you were in public just like Phelps. However if you were at home or a safe location where you could get as trashed as you want that should be your freedom to do so. Because it should be your freedom to make a choice for your own body. Don't get me wrong I'm not promoting illegal behavior such as driving while under the influence but some things are just overkill as far as the governmental laws on harmless substances go espeacially IF used correctly/responsibly. This is of course my opinion only.

if i were in charge, then the answer would be yes, as long as you didn't cause anyone else any harm

i got PDC for walking home from teh bar. a cop stopped me and asked what i was doing. i said i drove downtown but that i have had too much to drive so i am walking home (being responsible right?) he cuffs me and takes me to spend the night in jail for pdc. i wasn't even bothering anyone or stumbling. i was over the limit but i wasn't even drunk. pdc is the most bogus charge ever!

because hes "the best there is" and is a public figure now. As a public figure that represents the USA in the largest competition ever, he should have better judgment. Kids look up to him and say " I want to be like Phelps one day!". Yea, now what. Sure, it might not be that big of a deal to joe blow, bit this kid isn't "joe blow". Way to represent the USA Phelps!

I had a freind that was drunk and was asked to get out of the passenger seat at a routine traffic stop even though he wasn't casuing trouble. He also did the responsible thing and called for a ride. Once he got one foot on the ground.... bam... handcuffed for PI..
Some laws protect citizens ..true... but most laws protect government funding IMO.

Kids should still look up to him, he has accomplished great things. He is still a great athlete, and they should want to be like him. You as the parent should teach your kids right from wrong, explain to them what marijuana is, and give them some information, so that they can make a judgement weather or not they want to try it, and what the risks involved might be. We stick our athletes on such a pedestal, and hold to them to an unreasonably high standard, only to point and laugh when they fall from grace. We should look up to our athletes for there work ethic and the accomplishments they have achieved, not what they do on there days off.

This isn't going out and getting drunk.... it is participating in an illegal activity. Then being stupid enough to do it in public where you are caught on film. illegal is illegal. This is what's wrong with society....oh, because I am the best there is, I am above the law. Superstars ALWAYS get off easier than the average joe.

He wasn't in public, he was in a private residence. Perhaps a 40+ year old law needs to be re-thought? Booze used to be illegal too.

he was not in his house and people were there, as well as cameras. that is public ;) laws the law. He knew it was illegal and he still did it...and dumb enough to get caught. even if he were in his own house it doesn't make it any less illegal.

All of you pro-legalize drugs people will one day grow up, need to find a real job, move out of your parents basement, and then realize how many brain cells you've destroyed in the process of smoking pot.

The problem with this law and Superstars is that they have the money to spend in lawyer fees to make it go away where as the average joe.. that isn't hurting anybody may not be able to afford the magic lawyer. So yea Superstars can feel a little like they are above the law because they can afford it.

Everyone knows what is illegal and what isn't but i think the point some people are trying to make is that everyone is making a huge ass deal about a weed that grows on it's own. It has been used and accepted by cultures all over the world 50 times longer than it has been "illegal". i just don't understand why it's illegal because ...1) it's not addictive.. 2) can't overdose on it...3) NO SIDE EFFECTS......4) has more positive uses than negative... 5) Used in the medical field
Now if i was going to make a plant or weed illegal i think i would start with poison ivy or poison oak because that shit can hurt people with allergies but pot what harm has it ever caused:confused: i mean you never read or hear about a high speed pursuit with a stoner at the wheel... it's always somebody that has had too much to drink in a legal setting and then gets behind the wheel and thinks he's bulletproof in an illegal setting.

I can objectively sit back and look at both sides of this topic and i hope i haven't offended anyone while expressing my opinion. I'm just glad we all can agree to diagree at this point and try to understand while learning from each other.
