I think this guy failed with the whole concealed carry idea....otherwise none of this would've happened. I don't agree with the cops actions but I can certainly understand why it happened, with all the bullshit they have to deal with daily. It would make anyone jumpy.

Live in an open carry state, that is hardly ever utilized by a private person. And then have someone actually open carry, 99.9% of the time people freak out and call police.

    How come?

Maybe the initial requirements and training are easier to become a CO? I know nothing about it.

It surprises me to hear a LEO say that he considers himself above a CO. A police officer on the street goes about his entire day with the possibility of having to deal with someone who is willing to assault him. In the event that happens, the police officer has the weapons and training to defend himself effectively. A corrections officer working inside a prison will almost certainly come into contact with multiple people willing to assault him, and possibly an entire gang of them. Those people have nothing to lose, they have already lost their freedom. If they don't get him today, there is always tomorrow. A CO doesn't have a gun to use to protect himself. He's got to rely on his fellow officers for more muscle, or possibly lethal force options from a gun tower. A can of pepper spray doesn't do much.

I have a lot of respect for cops. But a lot of that respect has nothing to do with the man wearing the uniform. I see the gun, badge, training, and the support of all his fellow officers, and a great many citizens behind him.

Take that same armed police officer off the streets and put him into a prison environment. I believe he's going to have to change his game if he hopes to survive.

I wouldn't want either job, but I'd take the street cop job first.

Although open carry is legal and the cop in question was probably acting out-of-line, you have to admit that a lot of people carrying a gun on their hip when they really don't need to are just doing it to draw attentions to themselves. Carry a sidearm for several years in the military or civilian services and it's just another tool on your belt.

Oh! OK, I understand now.....and yes, I can see where people would freak out with "open" carry, call the cops & then the madness begins. Gotta love concealed carry in my great State. ;)

My understanding is that in California (don't think I need to explain Cali gun laws), a corrections officer can carry a gun when he's off duty. They are supposed to display the badge right next to their gun. Seems like that would have fixed the problem here.

I saw a guy open carrying a gun in the grocery store. I did a double take, because this is California afterall. I saw the badge on my second look. Otherwise, yeah, I might have called the cops. Not that I have an issue with guns or law abiding, trained citizens carrying them. But where I live, there's no such thing as law abiding and open carry by a normal, private citizen, so it does draw attention.

My state has open carry with no registration or permit needed for any legal non-federally-controlled firearm. I'm a little concerned about the new concealed carry law though as to obtain a permit you have to be background checked, fingerprinted and maintain a current address with the state at all times. In my opinion it's just a way to have a handgun registration without having to get one passed through the legislature.

I completely agree with this. I saw a story on a guy I want to say it was close to Philly in PA, not sure about that part though, that did it just for that reason, just to bring attention that it is legal. I think he enjoyed causing a issue wherever he went. Althoug he said he just wanted to be left alone.

Most people do carry concealed, but you gte the one guy, who just wants to do it, and BOOM, people freak out. Legal or not, its a pain in the ass! LOL.

We are not allowed to carry in a place that serves alcohol also. This the case in Pa?

In Kansas, you can concealed carry (and I presume open carry) into restaurants that serve alcohol:

No license shall authorize the licensee to carry a concealed weapon into:

"Any portion of a drinking establishment except that this provision shall not apply to a restaurant."

I believe that it's like that here too, but don't hold me to that. I honestly would have to look that up.

While perhaps the officers actions were a little out of line, the guy did try to walk away when the officer asked him to step outside. Had he just gone out, it probably would have ended without incident.

To me it's similar to the situations of people not answering officer questions to prove they know their rights even though it's a simple situation. While he may not have felt he needed to answer anymore questions, and he's probably right since he showed his ID and permit, at the same time, you KNOW what is going to happen the second you try and leave when the officer asked you to do something else. In ths situation where you know you're in the right, why not just humor the officer and step aside for a few seconds to avoid all of this in the first place?

And why do you think you know who needs to carry and who doesn't?

Well, I've worked for both military and civilian services and have done a lot of hunting, fishing and trapping in places with and without large predators and/or poisonous snakes and have lived in both safe and high-crime areas. However, all that aside, I suppose, like any other reasonable person, I can figure out when the situation warrants carrying a handgun and when it doesn't. The few times that people have come into restaurants and shot up the place notwithstanding, I don't think that it's really necessary for my safety to carry a sidearm every time I eat at one.

To my knowledge, there is no law stating that you cannot legally carry a concealed or open carry weapon into a place which serves alcohol. I just renewed my permit and while waiting for the processing, the sheriff started giving me a run down of places to avoid while carrying etc. It is advised to not carry to a bar, for the obvious reasons, but not illegal. Although a private business can specifically prohibit weapons from being carried in to it, it has to be posted at entrances.
The whole open carry thing, IMO, is just an ego trip. There is no need. Going hunting or to the range and have it on your belt, sure, i've done that. But you are just asking for trouble displaying a gun in public today. In PA, we can open carry with no permit, but the second you sit in your truck and close the door, it is now concealed and you just committed a felony. The days of the wild frontier are gone.

The whole "need" thing is a joke. Whether you think they need to carry or not, it's their damn right.

Sure is authoritarian in here, glad I live in NV. Later guys.

I don't know how it works where your from but here in NJ Police and Correction Officer all take the same test. But back the original point of the thread I could understand how the whole situation could have started and the Correction Officer even made it worst on his part by leaving the gun on the table (poor gun control). But it also sounds like the Police Officer could have handled the situation a little differently.
