I know there is a way to disable the safety lock out for pairing phones while driving. Tried searching, no luck. I seem to remember someone selling a bypass harness to disable it, but can't find it now.

Anyone have a link to a how to or who sells the bypass?

    Thanks in advance.

I absolutely hate that safety feature on all my 3 vehicles. The passenger can't even pair their device while you are driving. It's a ridiculous feature as far as I am concerned. With this type of safety feature, they should also make the mirror on the visor unusable so a woman can't put on makeup while driving. Or make all the knobs on the dash inaccessible while driving also so nobody is trying to adjust the AC or the volume buttons on the radio. And definitely should block all phone calls on the speaker phone so nobody is distracted while in the car. Have an automatic lock on the glove box so nobody tries to reach over and grab something out of it while the wheels are moving. Heck, why not just require all drivers to wear straight jackets so they can't do anything while they are behind the wheel. Seat adjustments should be locked as well and heaven forbid that the sun visor should be adjusted while someone is driving (Oh the horror!)
    Totally following this thread...

I don't understand why you would need to pair the phone while driving. Maybe I'm just old.
My phone is paired as soon as I get into the truck and the stereo starts, no action needed on my part.
If you have temporary passengers allow them time to pair before driving off.

If you have more than one device to connect to then it is not an automatic that it will connect to the device you want it connected to when you want it to. So it depends who is driving the vehicle, whose phone you need connected, or what other device you want connected (iPod), etc...
So for example my wife and I both have different phones, different iPods, etc...
Usually you don't even think about checking which device it automatically connected to until you are down the road and need it.
I think the safety feature is ridiculous because it even blocks the people from connecting a device who are not driving.
So I am glad it is not an issue for some who are the only drivers of the vehicle and only have one device to connect to but it is an endless source of frustration for families with multiple drivers with multiple devices.

Exactly! My frustration peaked with it over the holiday when I had to pull over on the highway to reconnect my phone. I saw somewhere, someone had a solution to the issue, I can't for the life of me figure out where I saw that.

It had to do with forcing the vehicle to think you were always in park. I don't remember if it required a harness or grounding something. Would be nice if it just required a snip of a wire.

Those links seem to be specific to a pioneer head unit and bypassing the parking brake. The Toyota system is not locked out by the parking brake. If I had to guess, it is probably linked to a wheel speed sensor. The vehicle does not have to be in park or neutral or the parking brake engaged. The only thing required is to be at a full stop.

My ‘13 has a vehicle speed signal wire going into the head unit. I don’t now recall which one it is but I think it might be white with a purple stripe. Disconnecting that results in being able to make calls while moving and I imagine pair to the radio. A Google search on making calls while driving in a Tacoma might find the thread on how to do it.

@vssman, nice call! Did some searching and I think you're right. In the next couple days I'll open it up and see if that does it.

I live in a big city, spend a lot of time driving and learned to face the fact that a good 70-80% of the vehicles around me are people who act like 12 year old girls. They all got their faces in a phone. Even when they hit the lane divider bumps they still don’t look up.

It’s going to take someone important losing a loved one to a distracted driver to make the necessary changes. Until then people will continue doing what they do because the consequences are minor or nonexistent.

Not being able to pair because it isn’t in park seems an unnecessary inconvenience.

It’s similar to the California gas can law. Your gas can has to have a stupid nozzle on it so it doesn’t release vapors. They don’t work right so you end up spilling half of it on the ground. Like spend 50c to save a nickel, smart.
