I have a 2002 Dodge Ram, that has the OEM fog lights in the lower valance. These will come on without the head lights, and they do an excellent job in heavy snow, and while maybe not 100% legal, I run them like that at times and feel it is much safer.

The OP's from San Diego and maybe doesn't need them, but they are great here in the upstate NY snow.

Furthermore, it isn't so much about color and/or ability to shine through the fog, but rather their ability to shine light on the road ahead because they are positioned and aimed below the fog line. headlights are meant for wide overall light whereas fog lights are designed to shine on the road only ~10 ft in from of the truck.

Your'e right about the Upstate N.Y. snow. We run I-81 up to Tug Hill into the lake effect bands alot, I can run safe with those lights on when a bunch of stuff is parked along the road because they just can't see anymore.

x2. I drove home last night in fairly heavy snow and the glare from my headlights on the "wall" of snow was distracting. I drove with the fogs and DTRL on and was way more comfortable.

Doesn't that mean your tails weren't on? Seems pretty dangerous if so.

Nope. Tails are always on. I installed the fogs myself and can switch them on at any time. I can't stand it when people drive without tail lights.

EDIT: I should clarify, I leave the tails on all the time by selecting the middle position on the three position rotary switch on the left stalk.
