Like @chenbro said - It's a combination of techniques using SLs, ambient exposures, etc... nothing too special.

A bit of a lull in here, huh?

Finally took myself to Waterton Canyon:

Thanks. I didn't get many which weren't blurry. The wind was blowing so hard both me and the camera (on a monopod) were getting pushed around. The light was poor, I was trying to keep from dropping the ISO below 400, so I ended up with a shutter speed which wasn't wind-friendly. I found this group of sheep just one mile in, but didn't venture further due to the winds... which means I need to head back another day, which is fine by me.

I've been catching up on my file backups. Until two vacations ago, since I got a digital camera I have been queuing up to 4.5 GB and then burning them to a DVD for archive backup purposes (in addition to having them on my current daily data drive and at least one if not two external backup drives). But with the last two vacations coming in at like 20-40GB each, I think I'm done burning DVDs for archives. What backup/archive methods do you guys use?

A lot of it comes down to cost and the level of failure you're willing to tolerate. Here's an article on this topic with a few things to consider: https://photographylife.com/basic-image-backup-tips-for-beginners

Be careful with using DVD's because the dye can fade over time and render them useless. If they're over 4 years old then you should get them out and try to copy their contents onto a hard drive ASAP.

Personally, I keep my Lightroom catalog on a SSD and my photos on mirrored hard drives, and both of those are backed up to the cloud with Crashplan.

Quality DVDs properly stored should last a lot longer than that. I've actually had the DVD archive save a file for me, because it somehow became corrupted in the drive copies - all of them (to be clear, the DVDs are the last resort, not the only copy). And my very first backup CD from the mid 90s still works just fine. But yes, all media is subject to degradation and should be checked and/or updated every so often. It can all fail, so it's more a question of how many copies you maintain. And as time progresses capacity of various mediums gets outdated which was more what I was getting at - DVDs just aren't feasible anymore.

My current system is the in-computer 'live' drive and two external backups, one of which is stored off-site. And then the occasional optical disc, also burned in pairs with kept one off-site. I don't have as regular a schedule as I probably should, but then in recent years I've not been making a lot of changes or anything, and not even shooting as much as I used to. That may hopefully change here in the near future. I've been reluctant to do anything with the cloud, but I have been told good things about (and one of my clients uses) Crashplan, which I've filed away for if/when I do. My roommate uses Dropbox for all his stuff.

I saw an article last week about the Rocky Mountains and the lead picture was Yosemite Valley.

I have a Synology plus extra bay and 40TB of drives in RAID6, with a script that automatically backs up the data from my 2X4TB RAID1 array that's in my computer.

The Synology does a cloud sync backup.

40TB?! You must be a pro. :p NAS is an interesting idea though. Not sure how long it will be before I warrant that much space. I guess we'll just file your system as 'multiple hard drives and cloud'. :D

lol, used to do Weddings/Portraits professionally. I work in IT. It also houses my Plex server.

I still do landscapes quite often and that is what I focus on these days. That and pictures of my kids.

Also, used to live up in FoCo. It's changed quite a bit since I did.

BTW, in RAID6 that 40TB is reduced to 24TB usable, but I can handle 2 drives failing at the same time in each box without losing data.
