Really dumb question, the key on key fob does not fit my gate! Thoughts, thanks

Welcome to TW. The 2016 models had different keys for tailgate and door for some weird reason. Your truck should have a bigger key that fits the gate.

My 2016 had a separate, larger key like Rock Lobster mentioned. The key in the FOB didn't work on my 2016, only the larger key. I made the dealer cut me a second factory key incase I lost the only tail gate key they give you....

One of the main selling points that convinced me to trade my '16 for an '18 was that the tailgate was keyed the same. I tried it once for the novelty of it. I quickly forgot about it thanks to the dealer installed pop n lock.

OP, if you can't find the original key, I suggest rekeying. It's not terribly expensive if you don't need it to match. Then I would suggest installing the pop n lock so you don't have to carry that stupid key.
