That’s the intercooler, which cools the intake charge between the turbo and the intake manifold. The turbocharger unit itself is water and oil cooled.

whoever wrote that is mistaken, but it sounds kinda AI

Yes it was. Compared to the 4Runner, I would say faster. $runner is heavier with a less powerful motor HP and torque wise. The new Tacoma has a much smoother power and than my Colorado. There’s no turbo lag so to say, but when you first take off you do feel that it’s a 4 cylinder. Pretty good acceleration through 2nd, but once it hits 3rd it takes the hell off.

My 08 Tacoma was a stick, so I am somewhat accustomed to what they feel like. I know I may be giving up some speed, but I think 5 speeds are fun. I don’t rock crawl. My truck is mostly for outdoor activities and at worst some rutted fire roads. I do the national park thing a lot, Adirondack’s and Vermont. I’ll test drive one for sure, but for me it’s the fun of it…. And when it snows if I step on the gas the truck actually goes.

Here're a few dollops of truth to add to the truths already posted:

If you regularly drive in traffic, like I do in Charlotte, the manual will annoy you to no end.

If you are out in the country, you'll wonder why people complain about it. It's perfect.

And in either case, you'll be happy to have the last manual transmission truck.

I'd get a 4G if they put the manual in any of the long bed configurations. They only let you option it with the double cab short bed in every trim. And I'd never go back to a short bed.

The idea of a manual is much better than the reality of it over modern autos.

I love my manual 99 but see no benefit to the manual in my 24

The fascination at the apparent need to voice dislike for manuals (and the reasons folks can invent) is only eclipsed by the psychic friends network knowing what people they never met will or won't like.

There are very real downsides. Folks in high traffic/metro areas should think long and hard about inconvenience in traffic jams and whatnot. Been there, done that. DC Beltway, San Antonio, and even Stau's on the Autobahn. But not everyone lives in those environments. I'm retired in rural Missouri. It's a non-issue for me.

There are upsides. Absolute control over gear. Overheating is never a real concern. Mechanical simplicity. If you tear up a manual (or its clutch), 99% of the time it's user error. No finicky computers, solenoids, check balls, transmission filters, nothing. Just gears and oil, just like those archaic differentials that are attached to a technologically modern engine.

Pretty much everything else is opinion. They're like buttholes. Everybody has one, and most of 'em stink.

I've found myself wishing a particular car had a manual often. I wish the Frontier I got rid of had a manual. I wish the wife's Crosstrek had a manual. I had a manual Golf TDI in Germany, and another several years later (after the emissions buyback/fix) that had a PDK. I liked the manual better. I would have kept the 23 Taco if it had a manual. The 6 spd auto sucked bad enough for me to trade it, for a manual. Your opinions on why you don't like manuals won't change my opinions on why I do, and vice-versa.

Toyota didn't detune the truck for the manual. They tuned it for the manual (and the different gearing). It doesn't have a torque converter as a buffer between the flywheel and input shaft. That tuning is 8HP less than the tune for the auto. Nobody's butt-dyno will feel the difference between 270 or 278 hp or 7 lb-ft difference in torque (at the crank, before the driveline), even though they'll tell you it can. Those are folks who also think their gutentight sensor is as accurate as a torque wrench.
