I'm picking up my first-ever Taco tomorrow and although I am looking forward to taking her home, I'm dreading the hard sell sales pitch for extended warranty, fabric sealant and any other number of worthless high-profit BS add ons.

This same dealer wouldn't budge off MSRP, other than throwing in a remote tailgate lock, and refuses to discount or match the competitive bedmat price ($80.50) that many TWers have posted (Thanks guys!), so I mail ordered it.

I'm curious to hear others' experiences in dealing with self-important Finance Managers looking to unabashedly sodomize their customers. I hope I don't lose my temper!

All you have to do is say no to everything extra being sold to you...

Just say no right up front. Stick to your guns. They didn't do you any favors during negotiations.
And tell them to hurry up because you have things to do.

Don't worry. Just be firm. Give an adamant short, no every time they ask to upsell anything. My finance guy caught on and it was over quick.

I mostly keep calm by knowing I have no interest in buying that stuff. I also remind myself that they are just doing their job - sure it's an annoying job, and they can be incredibly annoying, but it's still a job. I do my best to emphasize up front that I am not going to buy anything. Also I like saying something along the lines of: "if an extended warranty is so necessary, maybe I should buy a higher quality vehicle instead."

I usually let them talk, ask a few follow up questions as if I'm interested, and then tell them I'm not interested.

You have to go in prepared to walk away. I get it sometimes your in a pinch and have to get a vehicle. If you are not, use that to your advantage.

I don't know why you're mad it takes two to bone and you dropped your pants already.

I think when the bottom falls out of the market which it will, there's going to be a lot of sour people that owe way more than their vehicle is worth.

Negotiated price+title/doc fees. That's all you need to see before the "sign here" line.

Walking away might have worked when supply was good, but the dealer is just going to be like next.

Can you go in later in the day? I bought my truck one evening after work, they kept me there right up until closing, but it helped that the manager also wanted to go home lol

It never bothers me. I just say no, and they move on to the next pitch. Usually it doesn't matter if you tell them you're not interested in any of it, they're still going to ask about each and every extended warranty/protection offer, at least in my experience. No need to get upset about it, you're picking up a new vehicle that's yours. Be happy about it and welcome to the family!

It was actually pretty funny when I picked my 2020 TRD OR last September. When I went in to see the finance guy, he said he had looked up my history with them (4 trucks with this one) and saw that I had never purchased the extended warranty, and he assumed that I wasn't going to this time. I replied no I was not, and that was the end of that. Since I paid the balance after trade in in cash, my time with him was about 5 minutes. It was the perfect transaction.

    Yeah.
I just tell them, "If I can get the Platinum Warranty for $300, let's do it. Otherwise, no thanks."

There are two types bad dealers in tis country: car dealers and gun dealers. You're dealing with the first type, and already you have red flags. If you can-cancel and run away. I personally try to avoid them and deal with private party. I have excellent experience with this type of buying cars and guns. Never trade-in!
