This isnt really something to get angry about. You say "no thank you", like an adult.

I told the finance guy I didn't want any of that even before he started. He laughed and said he had to try. It's not a big deal or worth getting wound up about.

It not an usual for dealers not to budget on Tacoma sales price don't feel too bad. These trucks sell them selves. Take it or leave kinda attitude.

I enjoyed the process. As long as your prepared you should also. I let them try for entertainment. They even tried throwing the “shadow mark” theft protection and had it pre filled out on the itemized cost list.

He didn’t even finish his sentence and I shut it down. When they press about things like warranty it’s similar. “Wait a minute, are you implying this truck won’t be reliable?” It didn’t take long, I wrote a check, and got out of there.

I didn’t even get riled up when they had it inside and were assuming I’d sign and go. “Um, yeah, I’m not paying this much and not test driving first. I’ll open up the big doors and be back in 15min”

When I bought my last new car (BRZ) the dealer tried hard to up-sell me an extended warranty. I finally told him I will not take the factory warranty if the price of the car were lower. That got my point a-crossed. :)

You mean he didn't threaten you after that remark how all these new vehicles have 30 odd computers, and twice as many sensors that can fail at any point making for terribly expensive repairs?

Yes he did. And I said, “if you are selling me a vehicle that will need lots of repair, then I don’t want the vehicle”. That ended that line of thinking. :D

Before you sit down with the finance manager, look him/her in the eye with a smile and say "I'm going to say NO to everything you try to upsell me. Please don't waste both of our time and put me in a bad mood."

ALSO if your down payment (or first payment) is not very big, GAP insurance is a thing. Here is info I wish someone had told me before I bought my first car when I was a kid:
    * GAP insurance is sold by the dealer themselves, and covers the replacement difference between the value of the vehicle and what is owed on the loan if it gets totaled
    * If you pay the loan off early you are DUE A REFUND from the dealer because they calculate the payment based on full life of the loan

I paid my first car off two years early and wish I had known this, they owed me over a hundred bucks :-(

I had a check for the cost of my taco and handed it to the finance guy, easy transaction.

Unless one absolutely needs to purchase a car now , I would put off the purchase. Hopefully be this fall/winter supply will get back to more normal levels at the dealerships and they will be willing to negotiate. Till then I will hold on to what I have.

Anyhow. I'm just gonna do a drive-by on this thread:

You got your truck. You agreed on a price and it's on the lot. Just say no to the extras... Not "No, I know how you bastards work with your schemes! I will not be fooled!" .... just a simple, "mhm, I understand but I don't need the glass etching" or whatever. I've bought a few new cars in my life, and most of the time, the finance guy looks at me and says, "ok, I won't give you my speech." I know it takes a long time to leave the dealership. But, it's just one day, and it's a Tacoma so you'll probably be keeping it for a long time. I've seen so many people go buy a car like they're getting ready for fistfight. You can be polite but firm. There's no need to be confrontational or take things too personally. They work for commission. The extended warranty puts food on the finance guy's table. He has to ask. Just say no.

edit: some of these guys are assholes, though. I did storm out of a VW dealership once, many years ago. So... take it with a grain of salt.

edit2: nowadays, I feel like I can get the vibe of a dealership. All of them want to take all of my money, but some are less smarmy than others. If you ever feel like, ugh, these people are too gross, then you just need to go to a different place.
