Running the key wood d710 with a comet ssb-7 dual band. It's about 60 inches tall. It's a higher gain antenna and I run 144.390 on low power. I worked some simplex stations on 146.520 today. VHF UHF communication is definitely a essential for anyone with a 4x4 that ventures off the beaten path especially with her is no cell phone reception

That's a nice radio. My buddy is running and it does well. I have it's lessor brother, the D71A. Except for the lack of built in GPS, it does quite well.

Hey Y'all, im taking a mental health day tomorrow to drive around and take some pics. Leaving to of Renton and would like to get the most out of the available daylight. Can anyone recommend a cool track to hit that's not too technical since ill be flying solo? Mostly looking to get away from people and get drone/truck shots.

I'm in the market for a VHF/ UHF antenna for my rig. Doesn't that one you have smack around with low overhanging branches? Break?

It does but you can get the spring loaded ones. You can also get a MFJ. Or comment/diamond they all good down when hit. Or you can ma ually fold them. Or! Swap to a stubby for trail coms.

You are right. And some will hold up better than others.

I am running a Larsen 2/70 on an NMO mount. It has a sturdy base and a flexible antenna part and has handled several years of bashing.

good insight from experience. I’m just so used to being able to bash my CB fire stick with a heavy duty spring mount against anything and not have to worry

So @vorkuta775 and I went up and made it 1.9 miles from the lake. Didn’t see a jeep up there but we were forced to turn around after getting thru a sketch cliff side that had a mean snow bank from the cliff side above it. Maxx traxx got us out of that and then I ended up in the ditch, winched out no problem and moved on. He has pics, I took one:

Nice! that sounds like you probably ended up right about where i had to turn around. I also got stuck in mean snow bank against the cliff side. The trail ended up getting super slippery and it was pretty sketchy especially in MTs at that point. Shout out to traction boards, they also saved the day for me - also crawl control worked really well in getting me out (1st time really putting it to test).

Can't imagine it was too busy up there on a Wednesday?

glad you all went out together and had a winch/recovery gear. We went out solo but thankfully had enough gear to get out on our own. Its really just the areas when you are hugging the cliff that get sketchy but everything else is pretty fun.

I was curious to try and go up on FS 73 where it breaks up but didn't want to test my luck that day.

Can't wait to get back to camping after all the Covid BS last year. Just replaced our soft shell CVT with a Mt Hood hard shell. Looking forward to trying it out in a few weeks.
