Some things to keep in mind in general. Locals fill up on half a tank. They also tend to turn around if the ground gets soft. It can be miserable. Same goes for Alvord.

You might target Hart Mountain instead. Steens probably won't have the 2nd and 3rd gates open until July 4th (generally accessible July - Oct only). It is pretty regular like that due to the amount of snow up there. The best chance for camping is on the south loop road as you get to the base of the mountain. Donner and Blitzen river is pretty good fishing. The mountain has gotten very private/club owned slowly over the years, so dispersed camping is rare.

If you are planning, some things out there to go see:
    - Diamond Valley. Diamond itself just has a little B&B, but you can wander around that area to the SE toward the bottom of Kiger Gorge and look for wild mustang herds.
    - Diamond Craters, little auto tour on the way to Diamond
    - (Pete) French Round Barn, where ranchers would train horses in the winter. Pete was a scoundrel, stealing land and doing all kinds of nasty things. Frenchglen is named for him and from Frenchglen you can see the tall cyprus (I think) trees that surrounded the mansion he'd built his wife. If you want to read up on the area (and Christmas Valley which also had some interesting history), find "The Oregon Desert" by Jackman and Long.
    - Hart Mountain is an antelope refuge. It has quite a few rock banks of petroglyphs sprinkled around too. The main campground is also a hot springs. I usually go in November or later when people are gone and animals are easy to come by.
    - Malheur wildlife refuge stretches from Paradise Valley, just south of Burns to Frenchglen, and there's a decent gravel road that runs along it. If you bring kayaks or a canoe, it's pretty good scenery. Huge migrations come through in late March and October and will blow your mind. You can see every kind of bird imaginable, many are in the soaked fields around Burns too. The northern HQ was where the standoff excitement was.
    - in the Rabbit Hills, NW a little of Hart is a public Oregon Sunstone collecting area. Also in the area are where the basin lakes dried and exposed some 13,000yo camel bones. U of O has been working in caves out there to study ancient human migration and life.
    - MOST IMPORTANT! Time things so you can either get breakfast or get lunch at Fields Station, an hour south of Frenchglen. Their burgers and shakes are some of the best for any town, let alone town of pop. 10 Their breakfasts are very old school. I had a pancake once that was literally a cake from a pan, maybe 12-14" across and at least an inch thick in the center. I don't know if they'll be open by then.
    - Frenchglen is also a nice rustic town at the north loop road turn. They have an old hotel with now some cabins too to stay, and pies there are epic.

Everything is quite slow or far apart so you won't get to see too much in a long weekend. It's 6 hours to get to Frenchglen from western Oregon.

Pretty sure I seen somewhere in the last couple days on one of my FB places a guy flying his drone and hitting snow 11 miles out from the top if I remember right.

This part of Oregon is my favorite place in the world! I'm headed down that way just after July fourth this year. So many little places to be found.

From rain forests to deserts...WA has just about everything. A bit more sun/warmth (longer summer) would be nice though.

Wow thanks for the info!! I have the rest of the week off after Memorial Day, so we’ll be rambling around for 9 days. We’ll probably go into Nevada and check out the black rock desert also, unless moab opens up more by then. I’m going with a group who has been in the area a few times before also.

Near the Oregon/Nevada border is a fire opal mining area, kind of similar to the sunstone area. You can pay to go through mine tailings and come out with some nice stones. They need to be kept submersed to keep the color though. Bog HS is not far out of Denio, but I'll assume it is camped out around Memorial Day. It is a creek that comes out very hot and cools as it flows, so most people congregate around a couple spots with kind of limited space.

Also there is a wildlife refuge (edit: Sheldon) in the N Nevada border area that is similar with antelope to Hart. The Hart HQ at the confluence of roads has a lot of great pamphlets and information for that area. (it also has a great little visitor room with flushing toilets)

I'd point you to Jarbridge, but I think that is pretty inaccessible late May. Great area in the hills above in summer and September. Some pretty sketchy ascent/descent tracks on ridgelines too.

I came back up from Baja last year around Christmas wanting to look around Black Rock area, but storms and slush made exploring limited. There was also some weird shenanigans going on with a rolled truck and sheriffs running the road I was on while I was looking for a camp spot at night near a hot spring, so I made an exit instead. I think that's another area you want to make sure is completely dry.

    Made for great pics though

I think this is my new favorite thread on the forum. It would be awesome if everyone could post coordinates, trail link, whatever for where the pictures are.

bad ass, I am from Reno. Would be a fun to take a trip that far north. I have only been as far as that ranch way out to the north west of the black rock.
