Yes, Lodges work well after a little work. The cobble-stone finish needs to be sanded off and you have to start over with initial seasoning. The Field will pass the egg-slide test right out of the box. Fields are made much like the old Griswolds and Wagners. They are much lighter and finished WAY better than a Lodge right from the start. To me, $160 is not that much for something I use 4-5 times a week and will last past my lifetime.

To me, $16 was not that much for a skillet I use 3-4 times a week. Sometimes I let the wife cook. ;)
It took me 5 minutes with a sander, then a couple hours of seasoning. And then bacon!!
I'm sure Field makes good stuff, don't get me wrong. But!!
Let's fight! I'll hit you 1st with my skillet... :D

I promise, if you bought one, you'd agree with me. No doubt. I have a #8 and a #10.

I might, but I'm not going to spend money when I have 8" cornbread, 10" combo cooker, and 12" skillet, all Lodge.I'm not saying they are better, just lower cost. And they pass the egg test.

I'm curious about the bacon grease catcher. I've put the grease in a mason jar and thrown that in the fridge, but it's usually a little too solid to deal with immediately. Do you have a good method for getting the grease out?

Yeah I used a mason jar for decades. Have a long handled iced tea spoon that I would use to get the grease out.

Finally broke down and got this off Amazon.

Much better now I can just use a butter knife and easily get out what I want. Or any spoon in the drawer. The strainer really helps also IMO.

Couple of years ago was staying at a cabin during grouse season in the Mn. Arrowhead. There were 2 Griswold frying pans in the cupboard. Have known the owner of the cabins for a number of years and asked him how much he wanted for them. Said they were his mothers but he didn't like how they rusted, he turned 81 this year. To replace them with those copper colored non stick pans he gets from TV commercials he said it would cost him $25 each. I handed him $60 for both pans and told him to keep the change, no bottom ring, no wobble flat bottoms and no pits :D

Today I saw an old 'Best Made' muffin pan. Said to be made by Griswold for Sears and Roebucks. $95.00.
    Same place, a Griswold 9 .. 60.00
I see Griswold everywhere. I have enough for now.
But, I need a lid for my small skillet.

Yeah I am pretty full up on pots and pans. I use glass lids for the most part, and a splatter screen for bacon. And have a full set of top of the line All-Clad pots and pans.

But my hunting and shooting friend has an old CI deep chicken fryer skillet I am jealous of. He carries it in one of the pull outs in the back of his FJ LOL.

I want, but it would have to have a cast iron lid.

Someone just passed this Griswold on to me. They were cleaning their house, and said they never use it. We've got other cast iron that we use on a regular basis. This is my 1st Griswold, so just learning a little bit about it. Looks very smooth inside.
