Hey guys, I just inherited this cast iron oven and have a few concerns about it. I have no clue of the origins and always wonder how safe after cleaning and reseasoning it would be to eat from. I have done one round of baking soda/water cleaning to remove dirt and grim but need to do it again and finish it. I know its nothing special due to the TAIWAN stamp on the bottom. If it is safe to use what would be the best process for seasoning?

Cleaned up and reseasoned it would be safe to use. Not sure if Taiwan CI is worth the effort tho.

Howdy folks, I am seeking to add a dutch oven to my camping game this year, and am asking your advice.

Here's my main question: Would an Ø8" x 3" deep, 2-quart dutch oven be reasonable for feeding two people at camp? I would like to get as small an oven as meets our needs. There is no circumstance under which I would want to prepare more than two servings of food, and any leftovers would be trash or even worse perhaps an appetizer for the bears. But, I also want to be able to make all the normal dutch oven foods like ... I don't know, I'm still googling it, but definitely at least stews, pot roasts, biscuits, pizza, cakes, and brownies...

I never cook food at home, only occasionally at camp, so I don't know how to size cookware for cooking. The last time I followed a recipe or used a measuring cup was probably in home ec in like the 90s.

The volume of cooked food I want to prepare would definitely fit within a 2 quart volume. But do I need a bunch of extra space for the food cooking process to work correctly in a dutch oven?

I would actually vote to go with one of the combo cookers. Much more flexible than your standard dutch oven, since you can either use it as a dutch oven or as two individual pans.

Thanks for the response. I took a long hard look at the combo cookers, but ultimately decided to go with a more conventional dutch oven. In all likelihood I'll come to regret this decision, but at the moment, my camp kitchen bin simply can't fit a fixed-handled combo cooker, whereas I'm quite confident the conventional oven will pack away within the available space. Kind of a stupid reason, but such are my constraints for now.

I decided to go with a cheapo 10" oven, out of fear that the 8" size might be too small to cook certain recipes even for just two people (e.g., camp pizza).

Hopefully, this foray into campfire cooking will resurrect my long-dead interest in the culinary arts, which perhaps might someday lead me to a point where I could possibly imagine needing more than one vessel for food preparation. By which point, hopefully I'll have cleared enough space in my camp bins to fit a combo cooker!

If you get a dutch oven with handles on the sides rather than the lid, you can flip the lid and use it as a frying pan, which would serve the same purpose as the combo cooker but without the long handles.
On the other hand, those are usually larger units (like 5 quarts)
