Hey everyone, I started a thread in the New Member section a few weeks ago when I purchased my '04 Tacoma, until today she's been at the dealership while they waited on factory parts to replace the supercharger (at the time I didn't want it, gas prices being what they are out here in socal). Well...it was taking forever and after reading a lot about the s/c's here on TW, I came around to the idea of keeping it and just brought her home today.

As promised in my original thread, here are the pics. She's a 2004 TRD, V6, TRD supercharged, 4x4, 5 speed with only 25,000 miles on the odometer. Not exactly sure on the backstory as it was a trade-in at a Toyota dealership out here in Southern California, but according to the carfax she spent her whole life in Arizona until now. So no rust issues :)

Only problem so far is that apparently the tires are bigger than stock and whenever I make a hard turn left or right, there's a pretty loud rubbing sound. Guess I'll have to get a lift or something

Oh...and this might be a dumb question so forgive me in advance, but can anyone enlighten me as to what the switch is in the last picture (to the bottom right of the cigarette lighter)? Whenever I turn it on the truck's RPMs go up slightly and it sounds like a fan is turned on inside the engine bay, is it some kind of cooling fan added when the S/C was installed? I asked the dealer but they were clueless of course, and I forgot to ask the service guys before I left.

Yeah you're gonna have to look around at what that switch does. Nice truck, best color, and you were foolish to almost leave without that s/c!

Man what a beautiful truck. Remove the bull bar and I'll trade you my soul for it.

Yeah I'll play around with it tomorrow and see if I can figure out what it does. I've driven around with it turned on and turned off, nothing apparent happens other than the sound of a fan running in the engine bay.

Believe me, after being on this site for a few weeks I know how big of a mistake I almost made in getting the s/c taken off....part of me thinks that's why they didn't remove it, they were just waiting on me to change my mind lol. I can just see the Toyota mechanics refusing to remove it.

Haha thanks, I am planning on getting rid of the bull bar.

Just checked the tires and they're LT 265/70 R16....isn't that the stock size though? What could the rubbing sound be when I turn the wheels if the tires aren't the issue?

Hmmm. Yep that's definitely stock tire size however those are not the stock wheels. You may need wheel spacers or different wheels with a more correct offset.

Interesting, thanks for the info. The Toyota sales guy told me the service department mentioned that the "oversized off-road wheels" where the source of the rubbing, but he probably pulled that out of his ass. Wouldn't surprise me. It doesn't always make the sound, only if I'm cranked all the way one direction or the other and going up or down a hill. I'll take it to a local shop and have them check it out.

Sweet truck! That thing is clean A.F. You're probably rubbing b/c the wheels are wider than stock (maybe with less offset as well) pushing them further out causing them to contact the back of your fender well at the pinch weld. My '02 I used to have did the same thing with aftermarket wheels with stock size tires on stock suspension

Thanks!! That helps put me at ease a bit, once I save up some I'll look into a small lift to create more space (wanted to do that eventually anyway).

Oh and apparently I have TRD headers? I just saw the sticker underneath the hood...this thing is going to kill me at the gas pump, lol. Time to start driving like grandma.

Keep looking, they are out there! Do Texas Tacomas suffer from the notorious frame rust issue? I lived in Austin for 9 years as a kid, I remember we got plenty of rain and humidity but I also remember plenty of hot, dry days as well. I wonder how well the first gens faired in the Texas climate...
