The hardware would be easy to come by, at least for an ARE shell. You'd need 4 square nuts to fit in the bed rail system and 4 bolts for the attachment. The ARE shells have a lip that hangs over the bed sides that's drilled to allow the bolt to pass through and thread into the nut in the bed rail system. I'll try to get some pics up later today. What kind of shell is it that you're looking to buy?

ARE is a little different, the bolt goes horizontal. There are fiberglass tabs that fold down over the bed rail and the bolt goes through that. You can still use the bed rails between the shell attachment points.

I know that this isnt on a 2nd gen, but if the bed dimensions are the same, it should fit right?? Owner told me it was 60"w x 63"L outside edges. I measured the L on my short bed and its approx 63"L. Has anyone attempted to put a later 1st gen on a 2nd gen?

This is the topper Ive been asking/talking about. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It might be worth calling your local cap dealer and asking about the differences. If you look at ARE's or Leer's websites the caps are split up by body style which would lead me to believe there's a reason or change in design. The physical dimensions of the bed may be close but maybe the cab has changed. Caps these days are made to follow the lines of the truck. If you mix and match, it might just be an asthetics issue or you could end up with a cap that rubs the cab. If your local dealer is any good, they should at least talk to you on the phone. Also, not sure how first gen caps attach to the bed. Worst case, go for a test fit and see how it looks and how you can make it attach.

Edit: Here is how an ARE attaches to a 2nd Gen using the bed rails.
