Wow. This answers my question. I was concerned about towing a 17 foot Whaler. It looks like I shouldn't have a problem.

FYI The older 17' Whalers are about half the weight of the new ones. I think 2002 was when they packed on the pounds.

I tow my Whaler but it is a 1978 13' so much lighter.

Well put my little Tacoma to work last week for first time. Im a licensed Diesle truck and bus mechanic for a living and recently decided to change jobs. There for I had to transport my rather heavy set of tools to my new job.

Bottom box alone EMPTY shipping weight was 700lbs. And well it's completely full. As is my top box and my tool cart and my small service call tool box. The trailer I was told comes in around 800lbs. I guesstimate the total weight to be in and around the 3500-4000lbs range. My trucks a 2012 Tacoma Access Cab SR5 4x4 5speed with the 2.7l 4cyl. And to my delight it handled the load very very well. Even managing holding all speed limits on even the one fairly lengthly 6% grade hill (did need to wind it up in third gear to do so though). But over all it was a FAR more pleasant towing experience than towing similar weight with my past 3.0l v6 ranger.

    Loading the tool box

I just purchased a new to me truck. A 2007 prerunner access cab sr5 with the 2.7, a manual and only 16k miles on the clock. I haven't hauled anything with the new truck yet but I have with my old 2007 prerunner.

Here is my old taco doing work:

I towed the 52 beetle from Kansas city to Desoto MO a few times

Gotta love some vws! I am shopping around for a light single axle trailer that I could throw my split bus on and still be under 3500lbs

I had a '68 and '59 type 1, and a '68 bay window and '66 split window- I miss them, but I have no time or space in my life to keep them. Maybe someday I'll get back into a a/c type 2. Good to hear about the towing possibilities on the 4 cyl- I am contemplating a manual trans access cab 4x4. My current toys are big, but light (mountain bikes, kayaks, paddleboards) so it's not so much weight as air resistance.

I came here to see what ridiculous things you guys pull with you're tiny engines, this is the first and only thing I saw that was along the lines of what I have come to expect on this forum.

I tow around my 12' Jon boat with my 2.7 5 speed and have never had any issues. The whole package (Boat, motor, engine) weighs about 600lbs. I have plenty of power for passing and climbing steep hills. The tounge of my trailer is about three feet longer than it needs to be, which gives me some extra room to work at the boat ramps.
