Yesterday I bought a very nice 2006 Tacoma 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission, standard cab 4x4. It wasn't until today I noticed a noise I can only describe as an aluminum pie pan being dragged behind the truck. It only happens at high speed in 5th gear when I decelerate, it's not very loud and only lasts for maybe 2 seconds. There's no vibration associated and I've checked for anything loose (exhaust, frame, ect, ect). The U-joints seem tight but will probably replace as it has 125,000 miles. This noise is definitely coming from the rear of the truck. Any of you guys encountered this problem...???
Oh - and thanks for adding me to the group..

Sounds like a heat shield for the exhaust is vibrating...

I've checked the heat shields and pretty much eliminated any other sources of vibration. I'm reasonably sure that it's more mechanical. I'll have the u-joints replaced as I did notice a clanking noise this morning. Looks like it's going to be a process of elimination. Thanks fellas.

That is a possibility. I bought a new Tacoma in 97 - used and abused it for 18 years and it never made a noise like this. Thanks for the tip.

My first cat failed at 12k miles (2.7..). I hear occasional rattle noises now at 38k miles while accelerating but they're not anything unusual yet.

There is a new TSB on catalytic converters released from Toyota, so I'd call your dealer and see if you qualify for a replacement.

Another member on here has less miles than I do and is on his third catalytic converter.

Would that not rob him of power under acceleration though? The last cat that went out on me in my Jeep, it didn't matter how much skinny pedal I gave it, the darn thing wouldn't move.

    (insert jeep joke here)

I didn't have any issues with power when mine failed. It just rattled obscenely because the internal structure failed. I didn't have a check engine light, and I didn't have any codes thrown either.

I also have a slight rattle, and have always thought it was a heat shield somewhere. I'm at 140,xxx

Less likely to be a cat with your V6, but since OP has a 2.7 and they're having horrendous amounts of catalytic converter failures for some time now, and now with the recent TSB confirming that there is a known issue - that's where I'd bet my money if all other obvious signs of rattle have been checked.

Dealer called today and said my parts are in for my new catylytic converter. Not a moment too soon. I'm tired of people looking at me when I rattle and jingle by.

    Not a TSB.

It is a Special Service Campaign SSC and not limited by miles or years.

I have no codes or lights either. Is there a funky-ass smell associated with a bad c/c.?? I pulled over on my way home tonight and I sure have one. I'll be headin' to the dealer tomorrow to see about replacement regardless.

There can be a smell. I didn't have one.

I really had no sign of a bad cat except the rattling noise. All the "signs" weren't there.
