Had some minor pinging last night when heavily accelerating. First I've heard it in 41K miles. On premium fuel as well for the SC.

    Dear Gerald Johnson,

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

In order to comply with the Federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), most Shell gasoline contain 10% ethanol by volume. Due to these Federal obligations, nearly every gallon of gasoline sold in the US must contain 10% ethanol. While all states sell gasoline with ethanol, there are limited areas where ethanol free gasoline is sold, mostly for RV (recreational vehicle), marine or outdoor use.

To determine whether the gasoline you are purchasing contains ethanol, you should look for a label on the dispenser indicating ethanol content. All gasoline stations are required to post a label on the dispenser advising if the gasoline contains ethanol and the maximum amount.

In addition, the decision on whether to offer ethanol free gasoline is determined by each local Shell station as they are all independently owned and operated.

I'm not saying ethanol is a good thing but I think some people think its worse than it really is. I've been living in new england for over 10 years now and all we have anywhere is 10% ethanol. None of my vehicles has ever been damaged by it, my weed trimmer and chainsaw and 79 Honda motorcycle all function fine. For my lawn equipment I always put in some type of stabilizer like Stabil.

Back to the OP, could you or somebody record and post the sound of the 4.0 pinging? I honestly have no idea what it sounds like so I'm not sure I'd know if mine was doing it or not.

How many people hear this noise that own a 6 spd.? No matter how hard I try I can not make my 4L ping in any gear or speed and I burn 87 from any gas station that has the cheapest price. Is this just an automatic thing? If so maybe Toyota is looking in the wrong place. I wonder if any one has tried to stall the converter at a stand still and see if it will ping can't get any more strain on the engine than that.

I'm only noticing it slightly at idle right now on sheetz 87, not enough to be concerned. In the warmer months I noticed it at low rpms, which in a 6spd is only in 6th at 50 some mph. Ill try and record with my cell before I fill up again.

I did that, explained in first posting.
To much noise to be distinguishable.
Sounds like a diesal in there.

I had random pinging in my '13 DC with an auto. It would happen at a low RPM when the truck needed to downshift........went to high test and it has gone away completely.

    Lots baby!
This is going to sound a little weird, but when I first got my X-Runner, I noticed a little pinging sound sometimes.

Turned out to be the little plastic cap on top of the shifter boot (6 sp truck) rattling on the shifter. It only did it in certain gears. Removed the cap, no more pinging.

Just filled up with Shell 93 Octane. We'll see what happens over the next couple of tanks.

Update: Recently went on a trip and have put several tankfuls of premium shell
    thru my truck.

While the pinging is still there it is noticeably quieter most of the time. Wasn't a cure all but it did improve things a bit. I feel it runs smoother as well. The manual says this is normal, well that should make us feel better!

I've altered my driving habits from nice and easy and I'm going to baby this truck cause I want it to last to driving it hard like I'm in a hurry all the time. I seem to notice it less this way.

They recommend the oil, spark plugs and the octane so I'm not going to try and reinvent the wheel since they should know more than I. Having said that, it's annoying to hear it rattle every time I get in it.

It is what it is but I'm not liking it!

Update, I changed the plugs and it's better in some ways but not for what I am posting here about. I mean it runs smoother but it pings on acceleration. I had a ride along with Toyota Service manager and he said Toyota is aware of it. He described it exactly to me when I told him it's pinging. It's the exhaust manifold and cylinder head flexing making sound that way.
Sounds logical, hopefully they come out with a fix.

This may be totally unrelated .. however since fuel is mentioned all over this thread. It's a great read and not all gas stations are created equal with regards to detergent additives.

    Top Tier Gasoline <---- (link)

    "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. Seven of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.

These automakers have raised the bar. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline help drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, which reduces engine performance. That's something both drivers and automakers want to avoid."

So is there a fix to this or do we just live with it? Premium fuel work? Driving it hard and not nicely help?

Don't know if anyone suggested this to you or not, but I would get your fuel pump ramp tested. Mine was faulty at about 32,000 kms. It had power like it was supposed to but would ping with heavy accel up a hill. I ramped tested my pump and it was bad. I put in a urd pump and modified my housing to put the better pump in. Didnt want toyota to put another shitty pump inside the tank.

I have a forum post on this as well that explains this alot better, and shows the size of the original pump.
