yeah i've been doin my just in case research this morning (dont tell my work!). i can post pics later, the R&P carrier and gears are out of an 04 tacoma. same 8.4 diff as mine, it has 63K on it. the guy i bought it off of said it needs one spider gear for sure. i can't remember off the top of my head how many gears it has. i'll have to check.

If it came out from v6 probably 4. I think I have 2 pinion one. Too bad you are not closer I have old 4.10 from my 1gen
BTW if you are replacing carrier (not the whole diff) you need to setup gears. Which means your cost will be high unless you can do that yourself. With so many 4.10 diffs I would not even bother. Just get whole thrid member and swap it. to swap it its 2-3 hour job with:bananadance:[IMG] rating. So even if you dont have mad shady tree mechanic skills you should be able to handle.

i'll have to check my fluid yet, and i'll probably take it to a shop to verify. if it is the rear end, then i'll have to start saving up for a used third member. it'll just be a matter of finding a used one that does not have the same vin number series as the ones that are affected in the TSB, and finding one affordable and close enough. i'll probably leave my extra carrier and gears alone.

Yep check if it is rear diff first. Luckily 4.10 are common so I dont think used diff will cost you more then $200.
BTW you can check if it is rear diff easy. Over fill it with Mobil HD 85-140 gear oil. That is used for 18 wheelers. Big rigs have much bigger backlash so to keep them quiet HD oil is used. You can probably find that in nearest truck stop.

i checked ebay and car-part.com, so far ebay has one from a 97 for 299 plus shipping no idea how many miles. on car-part.com they are going for about 500 plus shipping if they ship. only bad thing is they dont have an option for the third member, they all say carrier. i hope its more than just the carrier and gears for 500+

Seems like someone here just did a swap.
Rec'd a complete, fresh third and then sent back their core.
    Can't remember the vendor......

:D oh snap so my third is worth that much. Yeah carrier (means whole third member) $500 is little too much. Find nearest offroad club ( I think Atlantic Toyotas) I am sure somebody will have one there for much cheaper)

Our rear ends use crush sleeves rather than spacers to set the pinion pre-load right? Could it be that he's crushed the sleeve and it's allowing the pinion to move on the ring gear under load, causing a whine?

Makes sense that the thickened fluid would cover up the noise until it warmed up.

Yup, sounds like ring/pinion preload are going to part company.

At what point ? Who knows, sometimes they shit themselves soon after the whining starts

sometimes they go on for years without a failure other than irritating noise

Mine is getting REAL noisy (not so much now seeing how my trans. gave up the fight around halloween..haha) Except my noise is really pronounced when I let off the gas, either way it bugs the shit out of me...

Yes it is the pinion bearing. But, USUALLY it does not go away, it changes tone. Put the truck in neutral next time and run it at the same RPM. It may just be the driveline hermonisizing.
