I recall reading a post where somebody replaced the shackle nuts on a 2nd gen with nylon lock nuts and just snugged them up instead of torquing them.

Has anybody done this? Advantages? Disadvantages?

You mean the nuts that hold the shackle bolts in place? Depends on the shackle, but it should have a shoulder built inside that it can only go to a certain "tightness" to hold the bushings and everything in place properly.

I know with old school H-shaped lifted shackles, it was super easy to over tighten them and the springs didn't want to move properly. Those had to be a bit looser than tight, so that the system could work properly.

Yes. The nuts that hold the shackle bolts in place. This is for a 2nd Gen Tacoma. The post was on a thread about driveline vibration. "Pinning" the leaves was supposed to keep the leaf springs from binding.
