    Hello,

I recently purchased a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off-Road with stock 16in wheels with stock 265/70R16 tires. I am coming from a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. I have a great set of BFG KO2s from the Wrangler that are pizza cutter 235/85R16 that are just getting broken into that would go great with my Tacoma. I went to a shop today and they didn't want to swap the 235/85R16 tires onto the Tacoma because of issues that they cited such as rubbing control arms, ball joint issues, pot holes, etc. The shop said that for such a tire to be put on without issues I would need spacers.

I've been browsing the forums and it looks like people have definitely put on much larger tires than a 235/85R16 on stock rims and suspension. Larger in both height and width.

My question is that has anything changed in the 2019 model that would make the 235/85R16 tires not perform well on my Tacoma.

I hope someone can chime in on this and let me know how I can convince shops to help me out. It may just be shops in my area as I have always gotten vague warnings from technicians about my tire choices which never are substantiated. Warnings such as "be careful mounting BFG All-Terrains on your Wrangler because you'll get 'too much' traction" and "those 235/85R16 will definitely rub on your Wrangler."

    Thanks

Get a better tire shop, those guys just sound lazy and or trying to instead sell you something else.

Check my signature, theres a thread on 255s on stock third gen offroads. I did it for a while, along with many others. You will have uca rubbing issues if you lift your front end due to geometry changes, but otherwise stock youll have no rubbing anywhere unless your alignment is whack or you change wheels.

    Welcome to the forum!

E: for fun you ought to ask the tire shop guys how they reckon if a 265 width tire (stock) isnt touching your UCA, how a 30mm narrower tire will? Id just like to hear whatever blatant nonsense they try to throw at you.

E2: forgot to mention, you may find it difficult to find a shop that will swap tires as many of them are opposed to mounting used tires, for a variety of "we're too unmotivated to not make profit off you buying new tires from us" reasons. Hell, most places wouldnt mount my current tires brand new cause I bought them myself. Had to get 4WP to do it.

Swap those tires over to the Tacoma! They will absolutely fit with no problem or rubbing anywhere.

Thanks for this information. I looked at your 255 build thread and it looks great!

This is all exactly what I figured just from the sheer measurements of the tires.

Beat me to it, that’s the thread I was going to recommend. As you’ll read, you should have no issues. Also, my current set of tires is a “used” set, and I had no issues getting Costco to mount them for me (they might not like the change in tire size, though).

I'm running 255s. Lifted 3 inches. I have rubbing on the upper control arms. But its cause my stupid stock wheels have a +25 offset

Got a Les Schwab to do the swap and it looks great!

Any advice on speedometer adjustments? The new tires don't result in too much of a speed reading error but occasionally the shift points seem to mess up.
