I never changed transmission fluid in anything either. 220k on a Landcruiser. 165k on an Accord. 185k on an 86 pickup with the rare automatic. Never an ounce of trouble.

Sounds like a bit over kill to me. I got 98,099 miles on mine. And never changed any diff fluids. Matter of fact my gen2 I put 246,000on it without changing any diff fluids. Keep on trucking

I did out of sheer stupidity with my 2nd gen guess who will never drain the trans pan and add in 6 quarts of oil on top of whatever was in there and drive ten miles again...this guy.

you would probably be shocked at just how common this is. I personally change my fluids (longer interval. I probably won’t do tranny and diff until close to 100k), but I know a lot of old school wrench heads that don’t. I posted this on another thread, but I knew a guy who never changed his fluids on anything. 250k+ miles on all of his cars. One was even a dodge. That’s saying something

edit: on a side note, something to remember is that the two biggest money maker at a dealer is the finance office and the service department. While I don’t consider it “propaganda” I do think it’s something to remember

You're wasting money on the transmission fluid change. I'm 62, never wasted a dime on one since the 1970's on any vehicle. Never had any issues. My dad started driving in 1936, he never had transmission fluid changed on anything he ever owned either. From the 1960's through the 1980's he worked in sales driving 40,000-50,000 miles per year. He trade at 200,000 miles for a 2 year old car with 50,000 miles and put another 150,000 on them. Never had an issue.

The guys who run the local transmission shop tell me that 400,000 miles is the normal life expectancy of a Tacoma transmission regardless of how often, if ever, you change the fluid. They'll rebuild it for $2,000-$2500. That's 13 oil changes to get you to 400,000 miles if you do it every 30,000 at $120-$200 each time. About the same as you'd spend to get it rebuilt.

just got off the phone with one of my buddies and I mentioned this to him. He said, it’s a hydraulic fluid. So short of leaks there really isn’t a need to. It’s not really lubing much, of anything. That explains the transmission mechanics response. He’s not wrong

I agree the intervals are probably twice as often as they need to be. (Sparks plugs, diff oils, etc)

I changed my diffs at 70 000 km and they were pretty black. At that point I figured they were good and broken in, so I changed the oils with premium synthetic stuff and I probably won’t touch them until 200 000 km.

I don’t honestly think my service is overkill.. I’m replacing my fluids.. well diff fluids at least to a good synthetic Which I’m running amsoil. Trans fluid I’m keeping Toyota. But I’m doing this because I don’t know the history of the truck secondly some trucks came low fluid wise from factory so with the mileage and the low fluid thing I’m just going to service the transmission. Transfer case I did order redline oil to put in that. Is this going to cost a bit? Sure! But I’ll do this now and won’t worry about it for another 50k or maybe more. I’m pretty picky about maintenance always have been.

I’m not saying you should change fluids every 10k miles on the diffs and tranny but going 200k+ without changing them just seems ludicrous to me. I don’t know, different strokes for different folks I guess. Seems like I’m the odd ball one here with this opinion lol.

Now imagine going 414,000 miles without changing any fluids but the oil. There’s a member here who’s done that. Hard to comprehend that. Worked out well for him though so :notsure:

ha!!!! Nah, just different ways of looking at things. I’m in the middle. I’ll probably change mine every 100k or so. Like i said though, I learned from a bunch of old school guys who never did it in any of their own cars. And one has some pretty sick cars (63 corvette convertible, 70 stingray with a big block and supercharger, 55 bel air). The one mentioned above never changed the fluid on his modern cars either!! (Early 2000 model years with 250k+ in both the darango and corvette) and he said he would drive them until they died. Ha!! He actually passed away before the cars broke, so who knows at this point

100k I can somewhat understand. 200k, 250k, or 414k I can’t understand not changing fluids. O well, not any of my concern anyway because I’m not the owner lol

Nothing wrong with that my man. Do what makes YOU have piece of mind and take care of your vehicle. And the being low from the factory is a very good point. I’m this way about any maintenance for the truck I always wonder if it was done correctly. No one will care about your vehicle more than yourself never know when someone has other shit on there mind or just don’t really care. It’s not a bad habit to have, always better to be preventative than curative.

That’s exactly it!!! I’d rather just pay up for all the fluids and do it myself save on the labor and know it was done to my expectations! And than if I screw something up or something goes south well that’s on me. Plus I like working on my own stuff and getting to know my vehicle so it’s a win win!
