Hello all you up in the Manhattan area . We are planning on going to a graduation for our Granddaughter at the Lincoln Center in June. I have no clue about the area as far as If I should leave my car outside the city and where . A safe place to stay . How taxi's operate across from New Jersey to NY etc. Is it a bad idea to drive in Manhattan ? I was thinking about leaving my truck at the Newark Liberty Airport and staying near the airport and taking a taxi to Manhattan but I do not know if that is a good idea or not. I could take a taxi and stay in Manhattan also .Maybe someone has a better idea ? I am not rich so money matters. We have never been to the north east so we want to drive and see some sights .
    Thanks for any help.

I used to go to the NY International Auto Show every year, which is at the Javits Center about a mile from Lincoln Center. When I'd go, I would take the Port Imperial Ferry at Weehawkin, NJ and then walk to the Javits Center across the street. You could consider doing that and then catching a cab at the ferry terminal and taking that over to Lincoln Center. You'd definitely want to look into when the last ferry from NY back to NJ is, but that is one possible idea.

#1 if youre on a budget, do NOT stay in a manhattan hotel. crazy expensive nightly rates.

if you plan on parking at newark airport, do not take a cab into the city. its expensive. fare + tunnel tolls.

parking in the city is expensive too.

so if you are legit trying to do it super cheap, park in newark and take nj transit train into penn station. or park in jersey city or hoboken and take PATH train in.

having said all that, in my opinion, since its your grandaughters graduation, drive into the city early in the AM. parking garages in manhattan have early bird rates. spend the day the with her and enjoy the city and see some sights. then drive out of the city at night, and maybe stay in a cheaper hotel in jersey before you hit the road to head home.

Before I moved to the area I stayed in the Marriott Courtyard just across the river and took the PATH train in. Now I just drive in and typically I can find street parking or if I'm desperate I'll park in a garage.

Thanks , I think this is the way we will go . I am thinking of an Airbnb place that is a block from the ferry . Is this a safe place to leave a truck ?

The area has definitely gotten better in the 20 years that I've been going up there, but I've never been there overnight. I've never had an issue of my car being vandalized or damaged while it's been parked at the ferry lot.

Here is what I have done . I went through Airbnb and rented a" new Penthouse " according to the ad at 4918 Park avenue Weehawken New Jersey. . It is supposed to be 2 blocks from the ferry to Manhattan with 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths for $721 for 3 nights including a weekend for 4 people and garage parking . Does this sound like a good idea ? It is not cheap by any means , but it seems cheaper than the nearby hotels . I do not want to drive in Manhattan .
I want to see Wall street, the statue of liberty for sure and go to the top of the Empire state building ? Can you guys recommend some must see museums or whatnot . We will have a friday night , all day and night Sat. and Sunday morning and night to spend . We are older and not clubbers but we will only be there once ?

Haven't been to NYC in a dozen years, but if you're planning to see the Statue, check out Ellis Island.WTC Memorial and Little Italy are a couple more.

Nice day, walk over the Brooklyn bridge- one of the most underrated things to do in NYC. I think you will be impressed by the views, architecture and slice of life of NYC- and it is free- once you get over to Brooklyn, you are in a great neighborhood for restaurants and DUMBO has some great installation art. Back on the other side, walk downtown and take a ride on the Staten Island ferry- also free, or walk uptown to Chinatown and Little Italy- both great places to dine.
Central park is really big, and lots to see there-also free. Museum of Natural History is on the west side of the park, and is a good generic museum experience. Gugenheim and Met also close to the park- wear comfortable shoes and take the Subway. I have traveled and NYC is one of the safer cities to just knock around- just don't be too friendly and you will be fine- good luck!

Pick up an MTA card so you can use it to navigate the subways and buses. NYC is easy for public transport. Driving and parking can be a pain, so staying in weehawkin is a good idea.

You may also try an air BNB in Jersey city if your accommodations aren't confirmed because the PATH train might be cheaper than the ferry.

You may also rent a bike to get around the area if you are adventurous. If you are into Chinese food, try Joe Shanghai on Mott Street in Chinatown. Great soup dumplings. Also, central park is nice for walks and entertainment.

I like the idea of a MTA card. I looked it up and I see it is half price for over age 65. I read that a pass can be shared for up to 4 people . Do you know what happens if sharing a mta pass if one person is 65 and the other is not ?
    Thanks .

I will say that NYC is not for everyone, fast pace, noisy, and people can really get in your face if you let it happen- I am 5th gen NYC, so I love it. And yes, MTA card is a must. You can buy them at vending machines in the subway stations and load them with whatever amount you want. Won't comment about the senior citizen discount- still have a few years for that myself- enjoy!

Buy two cards at two different stations. They won't card you at the turnstile.

Hey @Taco16LB , what do you think of the big Apple? Read your post in another thread about the Tacoma taxi's, and reminded me of this thread. Hope you had a good experience, but I know NYC is not for everyone.
