Just getting my first Tacoma. Planning to build a basic low-tech camping/fishing/hunting rig. Open to recommendations and ideas. Don't know if I will start with just a shell, or will go straight to a pop-up. Moving down from a long bed F150.

Based on your moniker, I take it you hunt. Are there any hunting specific mods you've done?

I do hunt, mostly deer, bow and gun. As far as hunting specific mods, not much, just a lift and aggressive tires for the corn and bean fields. I also put a vinyl wrap along the bottom 15 inches of my truck to help prevent rock chips from gravel roads.

That's the kind of basic mod I'm talking about. I probably won't even do a lift, or not much. I think my truck has some textured protection already. Don't actually have possession for a couple of days. Didn't get to take in all the details when I made the deal.

I also have a winch in case I get stuck which hasn’t happened yet.

Definitely a winch down the road. I'll also want a shell or maybe RTT.

Is it too late to get out of that truck and buy mine? It’s turn key with camper.

Yeah, I'm committed. And I looked hard for a stripped down truck. It's a 4 cylinder manual trans.
Interested in selling just the camper?

I don't camp in my truck as I have a van with a real queen size bed for that purpose. But I have recently gotten a plug in portable chest refrigerator/freezer and it is a huge improvement over an ice chest.

I've had great success when I first got started just sleeping out the back of my shell. Used it as you see it for close to 2 years. It was great to figure out exactly what i needed and wanted to have in my rig. Can't beat using 2 2x6 and a sheet of plywood in the back for keeping it simple and efficient

Great tip. Of course I would either need power in the back or would have to keep it in the cab. Hmm.

Great suggestion and photos AusBerg. That is quite possible where I'll start. I have camping trips coming in in August and beyond and not much time to get set up. Heck, I might still be in a tent then.

I got this one mainly based on it being a special price at the time, and so far it's been fine. It also has a long cord, both plug into 110 and into twelve volt so if you have a slider you might be able to run the cord into the front.
