Don't go in a bar that has women with adams apples standing in front of it.

That's the thing, unfortunately there are no "SAFE" areas. I'd say this, staying out until midnight and being back to your hotel around 1 am is a good idea. Also, try to stay in crowded areas, when possible, even if it will smell the heck out of it. The bigger the crowd, the more police presence there will be. Towards the weekend it gets roudier, but there is a party going on every day...

If the French Quarter is what you want, pick a hotel that is within walking distance of what your interest are. Oh even if parking at the hotel, keep an eye on your car (if not renting) and make sure that it is all there. If renting talk to your insurance agent about a full coverage/ VISA gold coverage. NOLA drivers don't pay attention to road rules of ANY kind... Also NOLA was built/designed in a time when horses ruled, so it's a pretty confusing city to drive around, unless you have driven in France...

As to the food, like I said there are place that are WAY overrated and will charge you accordingly, and then there are place where the food is UNBEALIVABLE and the prices are very reasonable.

Let me know what kind of food (and music) you are interested in, and I'll give you my suggestions. I'm almost a food addict, but I'm also a tightwad... ;)

BTW, the Zoo, that plantations, and the WWII museum are definitely worth visiting, as it is honestly checking out the Quarter during daylight. Tulane U, not so much, but the mansions by Tulane on St. Charles ave. are actually cool to see.

Another thing, be RELAXED, try to plan for the best and prepare for the worst. Traffic will not be your friend, it's surprisingly bad for such a small city and during "up" hours finding a parking spot could be a nightmare.

Again, feel free to ask any q's!
