Found an ARE MX series camper today on C-list for 200$
Speedway blue is a bit radical but could careless for that price.

I'm sure I'm looking at 400-500 bones to get a pro paint job. I've seen a few plasti - coat camper jobs and didn't look too bad in a flat black....may compliment the truck. If it sucks, at worst, I pull it off and get it painted.

    Thoughts?

Plasti dipped the box on my 1st gen, worked out great and it's way more durable than I would have thought. Took about 4 cans.

I don't think it came out too bad on mine.. I'm actually thinking of rhino lining it later on.. I like the flat black look.

It looks a little blotchy but that's because I kinda did it in a hurry the night before I took off to California..

I feel like I should be selling slush puppies or something. But, yeah, for the price I am good with it for moment.

I've discovered that removal of the windows on a topper is super easy (especially with two people). Pretty much grab a drill and unbolt all the fasteners on the inside. If you're looking at derping it already, why not look into getting color matched spray paint from a local auto paint supplier, remove the windows instead of masking off for days, scuff up the surface with some scotch brite pads, prime & paint to match?

FWIW I know that if you get the color code, you can order cans of custom auto paint online, so if you don't have any local shops to mix that for you for a reasonable price, that could be a good option. IF you were to go this route, since the auto paint is pricy and you're covering a dark color, I'd buy a few cans of good primer, a few cans of good flat white paint to build a nice base, and then go over that with the correct white, then clear on top of that.

It could be done in a weekend if you're up for it :)

Also, I like that you used a welding clamp to hold your topper on, I did the same when I found mine on CL ;)

Thx. Ultimately, that's what I'd like to do. Good advice. In the meantime I am good with plasti-coat since it's pretty forgiving. I'm not worried about the existing paint at all (even thought it doesn't have any flaws), but don't want to screw it up taking on the job you just mentioned. I love having a shell. Taking a long road trip in the summer, and I like having waterproof and lockable storage. Not to mention it's a good place for the dogs on occasion. Your advice for painting is a good one, and one I'm probably looking at down the line. I'm going to try the plasti-coat pretty immediately. Will post pics.

There is. I tried using it on some badges once and I didn't like it. However, at that time I was very new at applying the derp. I've gotten a little better. Had good success with flat black on my step rails. Holding up well.

It's all flat, that's why they sell a glossifier as a separate product.

I wouldn't personally bother with that for a shell, not only does $50 worth of temporary rubber in a can go a long way towards Rustoleum bedliner or sandpaper/primer for a relatively easy legit paint job, but the first tear in the Derp is going to cause the whole thing to peel off, which is a pain in the ass to remove if it isn't on thick.

If the end result isn't what you want, you said you'll have it painted professionally anyway - so why not go for some actual paint? Worst case, you're no worse off than before - and best case, you spend the money efficiently.
