Has any one had dipped wheels peel after car wash? I dipped my wheels a month ago and had the car washed at the dealership last week and no problems. Today took it to a local car wash and it started to peel. Not just one wheel all of them kinda bummed.

How many coats did you use? On my last car I used 3 coats on the wheels, the next day I hit them with a power washer and nothing happened.

Also, did you clean off the wheel fairly well before spraying?

Myself and a couple buddies have used plasti dip on our cars and wheelers. We have had zero problems with the cars but the trucks always have the wheels start to peel off early. We eventually quit trying and determined that the tires on a truck must move and flex enough to peel off the edges. Especially if you are going off road with the truck... which you better :p Not saying it wont work with a truck, just my experience.

My Subaru is going strong for almost a year, wheels and body with little chipping/peeling.

The only thing I can think of is that a rock chip or something started a tiny peel that you didn't see then the high pressure water jets from the car wash made it a lot worse. Plasti dip typically holds up well if it starts to peel...game over. Based on personal experience I'd redo the whole wheel

^He may be on to something as well, if the tire flexes enough, such at low psi, to rub the rim

I could see the tire flex thing . Plus when I dipped the I let the over spray go on the tire and then just rubbed it off the tire when done maybe that started the peel as well. When I painted my civic wheels in the past I used a deck of cards between the tire and the wheel . Which I tried to do that when I dipped these wheels but the card would not wedge between wheel and the tire.

I plasti-dipped mine last fall. I have 1 rim that is starting to peel. The other three are OK. I made sure to sand the clear coat on the rim before spraying. The one that is starting to peel will get a complete redo. This after several high pressure washes.

When you dip wheels with tires on, apply a THICK coat of armor all to the tire. After 10-20 miles the dip will peel off the rubber but stay on the rim:thumbsup:

I did not sand before dipping... Maybe that could cause it. I wish it was just one wheel I wouldn't be so bummed but all 4 shitty. I was thinking about painting them but not sure if I can get the same finish I got with the plasti dip. I would like to keep the blue metallic flake. Hmmm...

You shouldn't have to sand before using plasti dip, I never have.

However, you should protect from the overspray between the rim and tires with post-it notes or tape

Maybe sanding isn't required. I did with good results. Just bringing up alternatives for the op.
    Armor all still seems easier.:D

I found out with my dipped lettering that the thin areas peel easily.

I concentrated on spraying the front....failed to hit the tops & bottoms as well. The pressure washing has them peeling now.

In the OP's case, it appears the tire shine stuff on the rubber is working under the dip and breaking/has broken the bond of the dip to the rims.

I would've cleaned the rims with a solvent, let dry and then spray the dip.

... I think he has a bonding issue going on at the seam/rim edge as it's not happening anywhere else..

I appreciate all the feed back. I think I'll redip tomorrow I'll try sanding and I'll make sure I tape off the tire as well. Hopefully it will go better the next time I'll keep you all posted.

That's another good thought I will make sure I clean the wheel as well as the tire to make sure I have a nice clean surface to dip. I have noticed a couple of thin spots by the lugs that peel right off... I'm going to make sure I do 4 or 5 thick coats of black and then still do the other colors after to get the same as before.

I could clearly see the dip start peeling while it was going thur the tunnel at the car wash not saying the the tire shine from previous applications could have worked its way under the dip
