Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
I wondered the same thing, but this truck is superwhite, i helped a friend take of some decals on a white vehicle that had been sun baked for a few years and there was a sun faded problem but after a good buff it looked fine.

if this was a darker color i would be more concerned.. however with proper care the OEM paint last years without fading. If anything the superwhite clear coat may discolor and be darker if i dont keep it clean. Im not an expert so i could be completely wrong, but thats my semi educated guess.

and the origional plan was to dip the roof white as well so i had complete paint coverage. With my current plan to change it up in the fall im going to save the money and leave it open paint.

Did you cover your key spot or did you just cut and peel the stuff off it?

    this is the nato pattern

there is a very specific pattern process its not just willie nilly like many of the woodland copys people have done, if i do go this route i plan to go as close as possible to the NATO standard.. considering there is no approved pattern for a 2nd gen taco :)

glad to see it makes nerds shameful. Bicard probably parks at the mall with the other trekkies.

probably get mad when the dirt falls off my truck in the parking lot too..

I watched a video on DYC.com the other day regarding camo spots. Basically the technique is to do 1 spot at a time and let the spots dry at least 1 hour before taping over them. So, to do my retro stripes I'm gonna tape off the design, then the key is to spray the 1st layer, then spray the next 2 Coates all at once. Before the final coats dry you gotta peel the tape so you get that clean edge. After the first coat you wanna spray the 2nd coat on thick, basically doing 2-3 coats all at once, then peel tape quick!

    I tried it 2 1/2 times lol

the first time i tried double layering the tape (to make a gap like a badge for the dip) getting it all sprayed and pulling the tape.. peeled terrible

then i tried to mask and tape it like normal paint, let it dry and scored it with a razor knife. this worked pretty well, but i didnt get it cut enough and pulled a small chunk off. (didnt want to cut/scratch the paint)

then i tried spraying and pulling the tape off wet. it was too hot out and i didnt do it fast enough, so i just threw in the towel and peeled them all off

i did tape and mask on the 2 tone and i used a razor blade carefully and had no problems

Another post made me think to update here,

So i plan to re-derp my truck soon.

I am considering linex or similar coating on the rockers and flares but first i have a test to conduct. I am going to put down a thick coat of derp on a body panel, then use the cheap rattle can bedliner from rustoleum on top of one half and roll on bed liner on the other half. Let it cure. Then ill do some durability testing and see if its a viable option for part or whole tacoma.

I am curious to see if there is a way to have a tougher coating that is still easily removeable. I have a concern that the solvents in other permanent bed liner option will mess with the dips ability to peel off so im going to do some tests :)

So. I am taking on this whole derp yer truk project on my hotrod, cuz it has gently been beat to hell and back with a more than normal amout of dents on the roof. It is silver with white fenders, and I needs to all be one color.
First question: how much dip did you use? (Too lazy to read all 10 pages)
Second question: did you clear coat? And how much if you did.
Third: will squirting my truck with this increase, or decrease the number of people that stop me at gas stations and ask "what did you do to your truck!!???"

Thanks, also, any pre-dipping pointers would be appreciated

and a better picture. Tomorrow the roof gets done black (overspray red now, didn't bother masking it because its going to get painted anyway)

Its finally cooling down so a hot truck wont be an issue anymore!

for anyone looking to do a derp color that is not dark. The "blaze" colors do not cover nearly as well as the dark ones..

i have seen it recommended to do basecoats in dark colors first.. I dont know why you would want to do that. Just like normal paint, if your using a light color, use a light base coat if you have the option.

also, if masking and you want clean lines, a heavy coat around the edge with the rest of the dip dried but not cured and the tape will peel clean.

If its dried, i have found filling a small cup with PB blaster, and carefully dipping a razor blade in it works good to cut the dip.
