There are so many variables with any paint or coating to be durable. If proper prep is done plasti-dip will last many years and hold up to quite a bit of abuse. Just the same, if prep isn't taken into consideration even powder coat will not last long. I had new tires put on a couple months ago on my dipped wheels and they only damaged one area on the outer edge of the lip of one wheel (on the right rear) about the size of a dime and you can hardly even see it since the "rim protector" of tire that overlaps the lip pretty much covers it up. If hammer on/lip mounted wheel weights are used then yes it will be damaged. But that goes for ANY coating whether it is plasti-dip, paint, powder coat or factory coated wheels. You can request the tech to use sticky weights to avoid that from happening so all the balancing is done on the barrel of the wheel behind the face. This is the first time I actually put time into prep work and read how to properly apply it. I have used dip in the past and experienced exactly what you are referring to with fade and peeling over time.

Mine have been holding strong for 3 years with no noticeable fade or additional damage. I have used all sorts of wheel/tire cleaners, degreasers, my pressure washer, car wash pressure washers and drive through touchless washes. I did however use the plast-dip "satinizer" clear coat which advertises that it adds UV protection, so that probably plays a role as well. If I remember right I have 2 coats black, 4 or 5 coats bronze/gold and 2 or 3 coats of satinizer clear coat.

EDIT: My truck has never been garaged so what you see in this picture is the result of 3 years of use and never being out of the outdoor environment.

If you check out DipYourCar.com they have TONS of colors!!! They also have kits for wheels, their recommendation is one can per wheel. I would highly suggest getting a couple cans of clear coat as well since it will help protect against color fade from UV or harsh cleaners. Check out some of their tutorial videos as well, it helped me out a lot and I though I knew how to prep and spray dip. lol

I wanted black wheels but couldn't commit to spending crazy money on a new set yet so plastidip is working for me for now

For people who want black wheels I think dip is the best route. I for one am not a fan of black wheels (no offense) since from a distance you don't see a difference between dipped wheels or $2000 wheels. If I spend good money on wheels, I want them to pop and make a statement, not just blend into the wheel well. Again just my opinion though, different strokes for different folks. Hell, I picked up my FNWheels Six Shooters used for an insane price locally but they were black. The six shooters were on the top of my list for wheels I wanted, but in bronze. But for the deal I got on the black ones, it didn't matter. My original plan was to dip them as close to FN's bronze as I could to see if I liked the color and if I did I would get them powder coated or use CeraKote as a permanent option. But with how good these have held up I have been able to put that off now for 3 years and likely won't do either of those options for a little while.

Yeah I definitely get that. My favorite color is blue and if I had a blue truck I'd have either gun metal gray fn 5 star wheels or method nv with the raw machined face. I just really like the black accents on my white truck.

I hear ya, it's hard to beat the contrast of black accents on a white vehicle. Go too far with any other color and it starts to get ricey.... But black compliments it very well!

Hey “tethsojh” Your “tinted graphite” colored taco wheels look absolutely perfect! Very well done. I would love to do something very similar to that this summer. Thanks for sharing

Does American Racing still make the black Teflon Coated? I have a set of Mojave's going on 15yrs, no peeling and they always look clean even in the saltiest slushiest winters. Amazing finish.

edit: quick Google looks like no more Teflon finish.

You could use UNDRDOG Pro coating, though probably not on Plasti-Dip. It is a PTFE based coating that would provide similar protection. Though the longevity wouldn't be "permeant" like it was on the Mojave's since it isn't incorporated into the paint. I would suspect the coating to last 2+ years depending on the chemicals used when washing your wheels/tires. It can be applied to pretty much any surface of the vehicle, though I am not sure how it interacts with Plasti-Dip. I'm sure if you emailed them, they would be able to help you out. My guess is it will work, but if the dip is chipped or peeled it wouldn't be an easy repair since dip probably won't adhere to the surrounding area not damaged while blending it in.

DipYourCar also makes a coating called DipArmor. I haven't looked too far into it, since it is a pretty in depth task. On my dipped wheels I haven't had any issues with excessive brake dust build-up (OEM brake pads), dirt, road grime or salt/brine build up. Though if you have black or another dark color, salt/brine would probably show easier since it dries white. I did use a few top coats of the Satinizer Clear Coat over the Bronze/Gold, not sure if that helps keep things clean?
