Hey everyone just had a question that I wanted to get some suggestions for. I plastidipped my rims a couple of months back and they turned out pretty good. I started looking at my plastic chrome grill and it is starting to flake off. I was wondering if i should use black plastidip, which when dries, forms more of a rough rubberized finish, which is pretty strong and long lasting. The other options are to go for a shiny or flat black smooth finish. I know that the rubberized wont scratch that easy, but at the same time the smooth finish will, but looks better. Kind of torn between the two. Suggestions????

I admit, I am not a fan of plasitdip whatsoever. Not a finish I like on my vehicle and it's kind of hard to get a nice even coat.

I'm all about painting everything properly (as best as my dumbass can do)

Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
i vote just paint it. plastidip is fine on wheels and emblems if done right, and i even have it on my upper fenders, but it will get destroyed on the grill as much crap hits it, especially at hwy speed

i dipped mine and it lasted a week or so then i sanded it down and hit it with5 coats or so of satin black then 2-3 clear

I have plasti-diped all emblems and front lower valance black two years ago.

It is holding up well. Only place where I had to do a touch up so far is on the front valance where the rope is rubbing when I have my canoe on the roof rack and the rope going to the front tow hook.

I would think front grille would be exposed to rocks, bugs etc as much as lower valance. I did quite a few heavy coats and it seems to hold surprisingly well.

muddog your grill looks nice. Does your plastidip have to smooth shiny finish or the rough rubberized finish???

It is a smooth finish but not as smooth as if your were to use regular permanent paint . But that is what is nice about plasti dip , if you dont like the look you can always peel it off , and for five dollars a can it would be worth a try . one can can do like three grills , it goes a long way

I've used both Plasti Dip and real paint. I like them both. Plasti Dip is far easier to use.

If you want a different type of finish, you could always put down a layer of Plasti Dip, then spray paint over it. That way you don't have to worry about sanding and stripping. That's what I usually do when I want something to look even. And the real paint adds some protection to the Plasti Dip as well, keeps it from prematurely peeling.

I've had plasti dip on my front bumper and grille for about 3 years now and it looks like shit, it has lots of rock chips in it. But it's easy to patch up, I just haven't ever bothered. I did patch my rear bumper when a car hit it, you just cut out a chunk of it with a razor blade and clean/re spray. It comes out seamless.

no no no...I had that drop in bedliner in both the pee-runner and the new truck (silver one). here's what I did with the trucks

    pee-runner (white one) :

I had originally sprayed it with that undercoating stuff (grill, bumpers, and flares). big mistake because the finish was horrible. I ended up spraying over it with bedliner, then with satin black. Held up great for the 8 months that I had the truck. My only problem was that I masked everything and sprayed things while they were on the truck so i had some overspray :(

    On the 4x4 (silver truck):

I took everythin off except the bumpers and sprayed with bedliner. Well, a couple of wheeling trips and it started chipping, mostly the front. The flares were great, had no issues at all. So what I decided to do was sand a bit, re-spray the front and rear bumpers with plastidip, then bedliner, then sating black. It has held up great so far. No chips at all. I now havea trail gear front bumper and that i just sprayed with bedliner, then satin black so it matches everything. Its really not hard at all to take off the flares, and it reduces the chances of overspray.

Are you looking for texture or something smooth? My sliders are powdercoated and dont really flow wth my bumpers and flares so I might hit them up with bedliner. It doesnt bother me to much since they are used alot, wife and son getting i and out of the truck...well me too, im short...lol
