Consider the unintended use as well. You are more likely to hit another vehicle or animal than anything else. The cheapness of the bumper posted above likely increased the damage significantly....sort of like a brush guard. If the driver had opted for a heavier duty bumper, or even left it stock, it is likely that there wouldn't be as much damage to the rest of the vehicle.

Obviously, I can't say that with any certainty because I don't know the full story (or even what the driver hit). But I am fairly confident that the Fab Fours bumper caused more damage than it prevented.

I disagree with the "likely increased the damage" compared to stock argument. A stiffer/stronger bumper will force other parts to be damaged more, but some of those "other parts" will be the object you're hitting, unless it's comperably indestructible (large boulder). I think more components will break by being hit by the parts of the bumper, but the damage in the specific impact area might be less.
Basically i think if you hit something hard enough that your plate bumper will bend in, if you crash the same with stock components you would be just as badly messed up just differently.

Hard to say without seeing what they hit.

What I CAN see in that photo is that the metal tubing that "protected" the grill area appears to be unbent. The flimsy metal used in the main structure of the bumper clearly crumpled inward. This in turn, forced the tubing into the grill that it was supposed to protect. It also appears to have damaged the headlights, radiator support, hood and fenders.

My guess is that the factory bumper would have resulted in damage to the bumper and bumper cover. Probable that the hood gets tweaked and the grill plastic is broken. Fenders, headlights and radiator support would have likely been spared from the repair list.

So we can agree to disagree. :drunk:

There is no real way to settle this with out doing a controlled crash test stock and with a plate bumper. Would be cool to see that.

I clipped this prom queen who decided she didn't have to look left when turning left.
My Body Armor 4x4 took the impact and absolutely destroyed her car.
Beleive it or not, my truck was not totaled, and her insurance repaired mine to exactly how it was, including a new body armor 4x4 bumper lol.

    Stock-ish
My bumper after a static impact/collapse.
Was extremely bound up/high centered, and was trying to winch up an obstacle with the passenger side wing up against a wall. Thought it would push off, but wasnt the best winching scenario going on with the truck in a trail it shouldnt have been on in the first place. Something had to give, either my truck breaking free and up, or the bumper. Insane amount of leverage all the way out on the wing won, and I think almost any tube/plate bumper would have collapsed without some sort of engine cage/shock tower tie in to support the wing section.
Overall just interesting to see how it bent, lotta force thats for sure

I like the vertical mounts, but not all the square holes, as they tend to focus stress, even with rounded corners.

How did you color-match your ARB bumper? Did you special-order it from ARB that way?
Or did you sand/bead-blast the entire thing down to bare metal & repaint it yourself?

Need to add BAMF (Bay Area Metal Fabrication) bumpers to the poll. All of BAMF's stuff is top-tier.

    https://www.bayareametalfab.com/Toyota_c_38.html

Separately: are there any TW threads focusing on damage prevention or mitigation from heavy-duty bolt on or weld-on sliders? I imagine those might to quite a ways towards mitigating side impact damage as they transfer load directly & broadly across a large area of frame.

I received it powder coated black. Roughed it with scotchbrite(?) type pads, and 3m prep wipes, spray balled it with dupli-color, about six cans IIRC, then about the same amount of clear coat. Did it outside under a canopy. Came out way better than expected. I did take my time which probably helped a lot, as I used an engine hoist and straps to save my toes.

I may have to do the same with mine. The black powerdercoat has faded terribly. I was able to polish it some. I only did one section to see how it did compared to the rest and I think a good polish all over may be warranted. If that doesn't work, I may pull it off and repaint it. I'll probably stick with black though.

    Interesting, very interesting.

When I got my ARB brand-new, in black powdercoat of course, first thing I did was alcohol-wipe a hidden section underneath, let the alco evap away completely, & then test-paint it with some yellow Rustoleum "plastic-compatible" rattle can paint.. Or maybe it was Krylon Fusion. Definitely not DupliColor.

Coated fine, dried fine, but chipped off easily with a fingernail 24 hours later.

How long have you had your DIY paint job on there and how is it holding up? Also what kind of 3M prep wipes, exactly? Are they based on a common solvent like acetone that I could just do straight out of a bulk can & rag, or a hand pump spray bottle?

    Your paint job looks excellent.

Thanks, I think that the weather during the process helped a lot; dry and warm for this part of the country.
I found the prep wipes on Amazon, and it appears that they are Dupli-Color wipes, and not 3M.
    https://amazon.com/gp/product/B00B36EI1M
I painted and installed back in 2014, and, aside from bumping a few trees and boulders while crawling in central PA, the paint is holding up better than factory, as I will be getting the hood repainted soon. I think that I used more clear coat than factory.
I painted it, and let it sit for days, under the canopy in the summer sun, as I wanted the clear coat very hard before using the hoist.

All things considered that looks like a very good result. Without that bumper the rear half of your truck probably would've accordioned up halfway to the back of your cab. Hope you're OK & didn't suffer any major injury such as whiplash.

Also looked like your $5K-$8K (?) super-nice camper shell was absolutely untouched.

How were the frame rails after that? Any bending or distortion?
