    My experience says the opposite.

Sometimes. lol. Another "peace of mind" argument but a totally understandable one for the actual majority who doesn't own these diagnostic tools or the knowledge of how to troubleshoot. I still wouldn't consider it for anything over $1.2k. Your issue still seems to be a minority issue and also - I have to say it so don't hate me - caused by the user. At least this thread has helped people find that price range that seems decent vs. what most dealers will try to sucker people into. I know you said you were honest about the mistake, but did they cover it under a warranty? Cuz that would be decent. I can understand some issue where they are basically telling someone to "kick rocks" but something like a light bulb... man, just cover it... it's literally no skin off their backs if the wording on the paperwork is done right ;) I can see some places basing some quarterly bonus on how much they profit for the dealer though... some of those people are assholes. I'd never work somewhere that forced me to chose between being decent and helping someone vs. helping already rich people get richer.

These warranty threads are mixed bags though. Some swear by it, others refuse it. I've had both. I've bought in, seen it not pay out to justify it, and also seen it pay out to justify it - but that was only on a shitty car loan already from a place that knows the vehicle they sell you is going to end up in the shop. Now I just stash my own funds and buy more reliable vehicles lol. I learn the hard way, like most people.

Mine was lifted and clearly offroaded. It did not affect the coverage. The finance guy even explained it to me when buying the second truck. He said if something fails while off-roading the platinum should cover it.

My financed guy explained it to me explicitly, "if your X Y or Z breaks while you're out on the trail its covered. Even if its another brand, they'll get you that same one"

I wouldn't believe that. If you replace a stock part with aftermarket and that part fails I bet you will be responsible. Why would they warranty someone else's part?

I've heard some crazy shit come from F&I guy but I'd be asking him to show me that clause in the fine print! Otherwise, I'd call BS to his face!

I gotta go find my VSA papers and look that one up.

I can see where you may have an argument about the vehicle being covered if used off road as long as it isn't modified as it is advertised as a TRD Offroad. I'd also be willing to bet the opposite, that somewhere in Toyotas fine print it says if you use the Off Road package "off road" it's abuse and not covered lol.

Bottom line is that if you have a good relationship with the service dept, they may have more of a tendency to look the other way. Let's face it the only way Toyota will know if its modified is if they tell them. Cash tips and beer go a long way......

Although many Finance managers are ethical, there are some are just out for the quick buck. Covering aftermkt parts sounds sketchy at best.

I'm glad I was able to cancel. I think at the very least everyone should decide at the last moment (3yr/36k) what option they should go with. I realize now I can better pick what warranty I want based off of the driving habits and also what mods I end up doing to the truck as well. It always pays to wait until the last minute to make a decision like this because you will have the most amount of information you can have. I suppose the one major downside is the fact you can't finance it (which is honestly part of the reason dealers are getting away with 4k deals IMO)

yeah i would read the actual contract booklet. salesperson will say anything ( even if they are not suppose to do so) to make the sale. they wont tell you if you need to keep Service records or if you need to get them performed at a specific shop. also no way an warranty will pay for an aftermarket "performance " parts that is worth double than and OEM or Aftermarket oem replacement. we don't and my company we give you OEM or OEM replacement parts. and if you are in the trails you are SOL we wont help you because that would be consider abuse, or will be noted a Off-road use.

moral of the story is READ THE CONTRACT and don't go from what the salesperson tells you.

Seconding this post. I did go through with the purchase. I was not sure then, and am still not, how long I’ll keep this truck. As a result, this will be an attractive attribute if I sell before 10/100.

Not advocating buying an extended warranty, but another downside of waiting 3 years is the prices may go up by then.

When I bought my 2014 4Runner the 85k mile warranty was a few thousand. I got the platinum 85k for $550ish. First extended I ever bought. Paid for itself when the trans neutral safety switch, passenger side speaker, and other things broke.

i knew the game. The finance guy made maybe 50 bucks.

Im inclined to believe him because he is a friend of a very good friend of mine. This very good friend of mine was the sales rep who claimed the truck for me the second it got into the lot. Shoutout Aaron @ALI3N_123

If I wanted any more smoke blown up my ass, I'd be at home with a pak of smokes and short length of hose.
