I’m pretty sure if your kid died because you forgot them in the backseat, you’re a terrible parent….

You can turn this off in your notification setup in the Toyota App on your phone.

I turned the feature off on my parents' 2021 Highlander. Every time you shut the engine off.. *DING!* "Check rear seat!" It's a thing.

Like I get that there's no owner's manual for having a kid and they let anyone do it but come ON.

See the nanny warning wouldn't have stopped that guy because he didn't *forget* the kid was in the truck. Some people man...

I have no idea how it works but I think it is similar to the seat belt which the seats have weight sensor or something so if the seat is weighted down, the seat belt light comes on to alert you or passenger to put belt on.

Or there is no sensor for rear seat... just reminder thing for safety due hot or cold weather if the kids are left in the back seat... I have seen parents usually forget kids back there like old days.

@DennisD if you have anything on the seat such as box which is heavy as child, then it's probably why you have alert for that reason...

I have had stuff on my front passenger seat that caused the seat belt alert comes on. Instead, I put stuff in back seat for now.. since I don't have that feature like you have. Mine is a '17.

There's no sensor in the back seats. It goes by if you opened a back door when you started the car.

"When one of the rear doors of a Toyota vehicle is opened within 10 minutes of the vehicle’s engine starting, a reminder will appear on the driver information display on the center gauge cluster – a serious a multitone chimes will be heard if rear doors aren’t opened after the alerts start"

Thanks to a post earlier in this thread…
Go to your app account settings and turn off the notification. Fixed!

Does that notification thing only work on newer models? The app is pretty much useless for my 2016.

I don't see it as extra safety. How often does one open the Toyota App to look for notifications anyway, or for that matter, numbers incrementing on the App Icon? It is not likely to get someone's attention from a Human Factor's perspective.

    Here's my trick:
Always buy cold beer & put it in the back seat when you take the kid for a ride. When you get home, you'll always notice the kid back there.
