Driving a BMW now and owning a Mazdaspeed 3 in the past I can tell you this is not a new issue by any means - it's also an easy fix - install water meth if your worried about it. Wanted to state the above is true - kinda - that you stated - its the port induction in addition to the direct injection that solves the issue and the cleaning cycle, not the atkinson cycle that is helping this the most. Just FYI, your on the right track with it though:) I actually already have the walnut cleaning kit from owning the bmw and I peformed it twice now one on my own and one on my buddies 335D - which was absolutely horrid after 75k miles. Anyway - not a new issue - and pretty much ANY new direct injection model out there will have this issue - Toyota is on the ball with the port injectioin to help clean this up though for Sure:)

And I get that, but the 3.6L engine seems to be one of the worst offenders out there. I've read in the past about the Audis and the BMWs being problem for years now. Thanks for the correction.

We have a '14 CX-5 with the 2.5L. I'll be interested to see what that looks like at 70-80k miles.

ARE cap, wade inchannel vent visors, weathertec floor mats, ranch hand grill guard, tuffy security boxes in bed, lockable tailgate handle. Still have stuff that needs to be installed and still have stuff ordered lol.
the colorado the front end is too low, also there is a problem with the oil cooling lines, one of our work trucks the line broke went to dealer to have it repaired received it back and out plowing snow it did it again and blew the motor, so now its at dealer getting new motor put in it. all under warranty the service tech says its a defeat with the design and its common.

I can't say much for the Colorado....but I just bought a Canyon. They are similar in drive lines & interior setup I believe.

I love Toyota and I would've loved to buy a 2016 Tacoma after drooling over it for months, but once I discovered all the things you can't get with it, I was really disappointed. I spent a good month or longer researching the differences. About the only thing I'm sacrificing is reliability (unknown) and resale (unknown). The new Colorado's and Canyons are totally different than their previous generations so it really hard to determine a lot of that. I surely hope this truck treats me well. Funny...but right now, we're considering paying for the extended warranty. LOL

It all depends on what you want and expect......I was looking for something with more creature comforts and techy stuff inside.

I have an SLT which is the top of the line Canyon. Things I found impressive - Power seats, heated mirrors, remote start, AUTO 4WD, Intellilink w/ Apple CarPlay, Integration with Siri, etc. I got the Lane Departure / Collision avoidance system w/ warnings displayed on windshield (something I didn't need but it wasn't expensive to add it). I'm still learning how everything works - Bluetooth, setting up my Navigation, contacts, etc. How to send & receive phone calls & text messages. Lots to learn - but I'm happy. I've only had this thing for 2 days.....LOL

Those look like many a engine with high mileage and or getting a little oil sucked into the intake.... like a faulty PCV system.

Have you ever owned a Chrysler product? Run. Run away while you can. I had a Cummins Dodge. Worst vehicle I ever owned. Chrysler dealer network even worse than the truck.

I was thinking the Atkinson Engine was direct injection too?

They've been making that truck for awhile outside the US. It'll probably be a fine truck for you.

It can be boiled down pretty simple between the two I think.

Colorado/Canyon is the truck the average buyer "needs": It gets better mileage due to being lower, having car tires, air dams, etc. It has a lot of "creature features" crammed in for the money (think Kia or Hyundai car vs Honda) but ultimately not quite as well put together. It will hold together long enough for the average person who won't keep it 20 years anyway and I think resale value is a somewhat overrated metric. I think they will sell a lot of them and if people are honest with themselves it is the small truck that would suit most people best.

Taco fills a need for a minority of buyers (but a majority of forum members I'm sure), and a majority of buyers that want to pretend that: really go off-road and need the clearance, suspension, lockers; don't want or need power seats (my $60k, 2016 model performance car doesn't have them either), don't replace a vehicle as soon as the payments end in 3 or 5 years, don't really care about fuel economy (it's a truck, with high ground clearance and AT tires), real manual trans option on most trims (not prone to grenading like every auto eventually will).

These are two very different trucks and if you analyze your needs I doubt you will be cross-shopping them at all.

That is kinda bad. I'm thinking something else was the culprit.... like the PCV system or something. The air around the valve is too rich with something that is cooking on the stem and building up. I'd think they test run the designed motor and do tear downs as part of the normal development. If it was an inherent design issue, I'd think they'd found it.

I don't work for a car company, but that just what I'd think they would do.

I have - had two of them in the past just Dodge or Chrysler branded - and currently on my 3rd Jeep since Chrysler took over from AMC. I do know that since Daimler was involved and now Fiat owns it has gotten better alot better. My wifes Pentastar in the 14 Wrangler is awesome, so is the 6 speed manual - we thrown down 22-23mpg on road trips and we have taken several. No issues - she loves the free oil changes etc for the first 100k miles and I don't mind it either. I have pushed that Jeep hard at times with NO issues. The fit and finish is so much better than my last TJ Jeep as well. Even the leather now adays is of the nice quality not the crap of the past. The Ram's are a legit option for me - but if you can't read through the lines, I prefer the Taco:)

They are direct with a Port injection added as well - the self cleaning mode is what helps with the carbon buildup and cleaning, Not the Atkinsons:) The Port injection kicks on and "washes" the backside of the cylinders and valves while idling etc.

The ONE thing I really do not like about the Taco and the Atkinson is the exhaust manifolds are PART of the heads:( They are using the same coolant to cool the exhaust as they are the engine - I belive Ford did that with the Clevland heads back in teh 60's and ti was meh... I would be interested in seeing an aftermarket head come out deleting the cooling of the exhaust and giving a full header option and the ability to move the cats away from the head, as they are really tucked up in there just like my BMW now:(
